Email of the Week: Yes, As a Realtor I Have Access to All Homes for Sale Listed on the Iowa City MLS

Denise, do you have access to see all the homes for sale in Iowa City? No matter what Real Estate Company is selling it? If so, do we just get you the address and you take it from there?Buyers agents = Personal Representation when you're buying a home in Iowa City

This is a question I got in an email this week. It was a big wake up call for me. I'd met with these guys and explained the benefits of Buyer Agency. I write posts about the benefits of working with a Buyer's Agent all the time apparently assuming that Buyers know I can get them into any home they want to see. You know what they say about people who assume, right?

From a Buyer's perspective, what benefit could it possibly be to work with a Buyer's Agent if you don't have the option to see every single home listed out there? It's fine that a Buyer's Agent will give you a peace of mind in a transaction, but the first question has to be, can they get you into ALL the homes you want to see? Duh... How did I miss passing along this vital piece of information?  YES, as a Realtor I have access to ALL homes for sale in Iowa City, regardless of the Brokerage listing it. As it happens, I'm a member of the Iowa City Area MLS and have access to all homes listed in Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty and surrounding areas in Johnson County.

And to answer the rest of the question. There are a couple of ways we can play it. I can send you a list of all homes fitting the criteria you give me and you let me know which ones you'd like to set up showings for or need more info on. OR... You do your own search online. And we know you have plenty of choices on how to do that these days. When you find something interesting you just send me the address of the home or homes you're interested in and we take it from there.

Do you have questions about the buying process? Or maybe about buyer agency? Drop me a line or leave a comment. I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Denise-It is sometimes amazing in this day and age what people don't know about what a realtor can do for them. Nicely written. BTW-I came out of the public bathroom to make this comment. LOL

It really was something Sharon. I thought the opening doors bit didn't need explanation. Wrong. And after putting myself in their shoes I could see why they would think the way they did. It makes more sense that we have access to homes listed by our own Real Estate Company and not the listings from other brokerages. In fact I think in some states it is actually like that anyway.

It taught me a lesson anyway. It reminded me that I do this 24/7. For buyers, (or sellers for that matter), on the other hand it only comes up a few times in a lifetime. I really need to remember that and not make assumptions.

Glad you made it out of that publice bathroom. Hoping to get another good shot were you?;-)
