I Want to Buy a House. How do I get Started?
When the timing is right to make a home purchase, you will have many, many questions. The very first thing you should do is find a real estate agent who is willing to help you.
Now, sometimes buyers want to skip this first step. They want to look at homes, visit open houses, and click around on the Internet before sitting down with a "sales" person. They are afraid of being pushed into a purchase by an aggressive sales agent.
But be aware that a buyer's agent can be your best asset in a home purchase. The buyer's agent will coordinate the entire purchasing process for you. From getting pre-approved for a mortgage, to viewing homes, to making an offer, to surviving the home inspection and mortgage commitment - your real estate agent knows what obstacles may come up and can help you move smoothly from step to step.
Some real estate agents only work with sellers. They are listing agents and do not work with buyers. You want to find an agent who has experience working with buyers. When you start to talk with agents, ask them if they work with buyers, sellers, or both. Ask them if they have a plan to help home buyers. Ask them what tools they use when they work with home buyers.
Take the time to find an agent with whom you are comfortable. That person will guide you through your purchase and connect you to all the other professionals you will need during the process. They will be your key contact as you move from step to step. Finding a buyer's agent is the very first step you should take when you begin your home search.
