EVERYONE WANTS TO GET IN THE REAL ESTATE BUSINESS - A RANT

By

LOOKS LIKE THE REAL ESTATE BUSINESS IS TOUGH FOR EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE LEAD COMPANIES.  These on line lead generating entities junk up my mail box, the search engines, the directories, our servers and our lives.  They pallute the search engines as badly as a diesel engine on the highway pallutes the air we breath behind it.

I've gotten the below in my "Junk" e-mail box about 25 times.  Of course, this isn't the only one, just the most annoying today.  Junk mail has increased a bit over the past week.  This junk adds a tremendous cost for all of us using the Internet to advertise our services to consumers.  Funny thing about the lead generating companies, they too, advertise our services.  They just don't provide any services to the consumer.

All I want them to do is "Get out of my way" and let the consumer find the web site of a licensed real estate agent or broker where the consumer won't be sold to agents like so much meat.

If every agent and broker in the country would stop falling for these offers of good buyer and seller leads today, they would all dry up and go away and we'd all move directly UP on the search engine results pages.  Imagine what the Internet would be like if a consumer searching for "real estate anywhere" would see actual licensed real estate agents and brokers at the top of SERP and not 3 or 4 lead generation companies that grab the consumer inquiries with promise of great service when they are really simply selling the consumer to agents and brokers who will pay their price for the consumer lead.  These companies are the epitome of "no added value".

I saw a post on ActiveRain this a.m. from a lead generation company seeking mortgage leads to sell to mortgage loan folks.  I'm sure this isn't a first.

The lead generation companies cannot help a consumer find a home.
The lead generation companies cannot help a consumer buy a home.
The lead generation companies cannot help a consumer sell a home.
The lead generation companies cannot make mortgage loans.
The lead generation companies can only suck the consumer in and sell them to the
agent, broker, loan officer who will pay the price.

Work ActiveRain and generate your own buyer, seller, borrower contacts.  At least, if the consumer selects you, you'll be able to deliver the service they need and not just sell them to the genuine real estate service providers.

Lead generation is a horribly false business! I will never spend my hard earned money purchasing leads.

I'm cheap anyway...I like to do my own website (you know) and do my own thing (control issues maybe?)  so that is far from my purse.

Stay cheap Sally.  If you do your own thing, at least you won't be pouring good money after bad.

These guys do know how to generate leads.  No quesion about that.  But, it isn't the agents that benefit from the leads.  Many reasons why.

I just tell them that I get a better response knocking on doors in my farm neighborhood or sponsoring and bringing coffee to the little league games.  How do I know that these companies don't have a room full of people making the "leads" they send to me?  What a scam.  Sherry

Lenn - I am with you. It seems lately the volume of telemarketing calls I receive from these companies has doubled. I have never tried them and don't believe I ever will. I see no value in it at all.

I just have to say 'wow' about that graphic you drew. =)  And my marketing money is spent on ME not the aggregators. But you knew that already!

Kevin and Sherry.  Good for you.  I bring in a lot of business from Internet advertising but they are my own web sites.  I don't buy leads.  I just want them to get out of our way.

Bill.  Funny you mentioned that.  I just got a call from YellowPages.com.

Leigh.  Ha!!  I wondered if that graphic was a tad to "graphic".   I believe it is possible that I watch too much CSI.  Somehow it just had to be shown.

Mother always said "if it sounds too good to be true....."

Similar companies in the mortgage industry try to sell you quality leads that have already been sold to any other number of mortgage companies.  Unsuspecting Mortgage Consultants will enroll only to find out that most of the referrals are from the States anyway.

I have this same issue with all the firms that will (for only $89.99 /month) make you number one on all the website search engines.

Lenn,

Isn't that the truth. Lead generators are crowding out search engine pages to our detriment. The market being so tough now makes this is a good time for them to fool agents and brokers into buying their mostly useless product.

Dave.  Thanks for commenting.  I agree.  I get called from all of them.

Esko.  The market is tough and I expect some agents have no business and they are ripe for these scams.

Lenn;

I sooo agree - so over these folks.  The worst is when they call you.  I always answer my phone (when I am not with clients).  I can't even assume "unavailable" and blocked or nonsensical numbers are telemarketers; because many government agencies block or scramble their outgoing numbers.

Whenever I hear "I saw your webpage and want to know if you want to be at the top of google.."  --- The sound is "click".  I don't even speak to them - just "click".  Sorry - but it beats screaming at them!

James.  Of course you have to answer your phone.  Most of my best business comes in over the phone.  Not answering the phone when you've got your 800# all over the Internet is nonsense.  Of course, you answer your phone.

In fact, agents who live on voice mail lose buyer referrals from me.  I can't wait for them to return calls and I don't expect home buyers looking for an agent to wait for me to return their calls either.

When I get a call from a vendor, I chat with them long enough to get them into their script and then just lay the phone on the floor and let them talk to themselves.

LOL at the last sentence to your comment to James, Lenn.  By the way, I love your rants!  I've had very few 'good' experiences with lead companies over the years and somehow am receiving more calls and emails now than ever to sign up.  Hmmm........

Thanks for commenting.  I get several calls a day.  They believe that we are all stupid.  All I want them to do is get out of my way and let me move up in Google SERP.

We'll be getting more calls from them, I fear.  It's a bloddy agrivation.  I don't mind chatting with them for a minute or two.  But, the minute they start with something ignorant like, "So, you don't want any Internet business?", that's when the phone hits the floor.

Jay.  That's funny.  No trouble with my info, I'm all over the Internet.  Which surprises me when they call and say "would you like more businss from the Internet".

Sometimes I ask them where they found me.

I have had these companies call numerous times. Then a good friend of mine went to work for a large company, who suggest they have values. He insisted that I join and promised the world. Against my better judgement, I signed an Iron Clad Contract. I through about $5000 away for nothing so that he could earn about $300-$500. This program wasted so much of my time and money. I told him that I wanted to cancel. He then told me that it was out of his hands. That wasn't what he said when I was SOLD. I would have rather wrote him a check for this amount. He traded that commission check for our friendship. A friend would never do that. He sold me alright!!!

Nathan, Nathan.

All I can say is that "with friends like that, you don't need enemies".

With real estate in the dump, you'd think these lead pimps would have so much business they wouldn't have to solicitate us daily.  But, it never stops.
