On January 3, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a 56 page report outlining the study of Chinese Drywall performed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The LBNL was directed to perform additional tests on defective drywall with different methods in order to determine if results are consistant with those of previous tests. Please email Inspector@krossinspectors.com for a copy of this new report in PDF format.
The CPSC has now concluded that the results do not warrant any change in guidance previously offered by their agency.
What does this mean to you?
This means to use EXTREME caution when investigating a home for the presence of Chinese Drywall. Many consumers and Inspectors are still following the Interim Guidance issued by the CPSC on 1/28/2010. The most recent updated version was issued on 8/27/2010. If you or your Inspector are not following this new guidance, then home owners and potential home buyers may be placed at risk!
The most significant change in the guidance issued on 8/27/2010 is that the CPSC and the Federal Interagency Task Force "do not believe strontium has a causative role in the problems reported with the problematic drywall". Please use caution when approached by an Inspector that uses strontium detection methods.
Kross Inspectors was following the minimum recommended guidance issued by the CPSC for over a year prior to the first guidance issued on 1/28/2010.
