(Post #8 in the "Why I Love Laramie" series)
Any of you who have seen Sarah Palin's Alaska will know that there are some of us who enjoy the simpler things in life. Hanging out with our families, the great outdoors, playing on our computers or just renting movies to watch with the kids. We're the ones that wait six months to see a movie on DVD rather than pay big bucks at the theater. Others may find us uninspired or even, gasp, dull. But never fear, there is a place for everybody in this world. That is why this blog series is titled "Why I love Laramie"..... For every ordinary thing that I love, there will be something completely different that someone else loves. As such here are some things that other people love or like to do around here:
-
Attend University of Wyoming sporting events - we have some of the most faithful fans anywhere!
-
Go Snowmobiling in the Snowy Range - there are miles and miles of roads to ride on.
-
Hunting big game - some locals hunt enough big game to feed their families all year long. And my really frugal friend cuts it all up and freezes it herself. There are places that will do it for you, you know!
-
We are a one high school town. So even people without kids will sometimes go to cheer on the home team since there's no worrying about which school to root for!
-
Experience the night Life - mmmm, maybe not in an upscale way - but I'm pretty sure you would feel safe in any bar in town. (We don't call them "clubs". They're bars, plain and simple.)
And back to one of the experiences that made our day a few years back, another "I Love Laramie" moment. We were driving out by the old Happy Jack Ski Area (about 15 miles east of town) looking for a hiking trail when we came upon these twin moose babies shoulder high in a marsh by a log. Then the log moved and we saw it was their mama . She wasted no time gently herding them off into the denser brush and away from their human intruders.

See, it is beautiful in the summer. Almost makes you forget about days like today (Temperature- 1 degree!)

12 Comments on Why I Love Laramie - unexpected moose babies!
Brenda - Lush and lovely photo--parenting is so important and it looks like this mama moose is an expert at taking care of her babies.
I'm with you on waiting for the dvd's to come out! I also like Netflix. I don't like to go to the showhouse, it's crowded, babys cry and I always sit next to someone that has a bad cold.
Much better crowd at a smaller school, truly community support!
Norma, you are right about that mama moose. One of the warnings always repeated to us growing up was to never go near a mama moose - this one really was quick to spirit them away. We wanted to stare from the safety of the car window much longer than she would let us!
Wanda, It sounds like we might live in parallel worlds! : )
Brenda, love those little meese! Have yet to travel to your state--one day.
When you do you shouldn't miss Yellowstone Park - it's amazing. And, come in the summer!
Brenda, I also treasure the simple things in life...and haven't been to a theater to watch a movie in...ummm...about 10 years? Whatever it may be, it's well beyond my memory to even name the last movie seen! :)
Love the mama moose and her babies! :)
Leilani
Brenda--You DO make it sound simple and wonderful. Really my kind of place. I have never even seen a moose. How neat to see the babies. We see deer here all the time, but I am still in awe. I know there is a purpose for hunting---keeping the herds thinned so they don't starve, but I could never personally shoot one of these beautiful creatures. Guess I would live on nuts, roots and berries first! I am really enjoying your localism posts!
Brneda, Laramie sounds like a delightful place to call home! I would love to visit some day -- looks like another world than I am used to. Love the photo!
Leilani, I was pretty sure I was not the only one that didn't go to the theater much. I had the big idea a couple years back to let my daughter invite some friends to go to a movie with us for her birthday. Whoops - it was fun but turned out to be REALLY expensive!
Pat, It's true, I'm not a hunter either. Good thing I live in this century and don't have to. Though I have a feeling we'd learn to shoot and eat it if that's all there was...
Joyce, It is a delightful place, for me anyway. Texas, huh? Now that is a big state! I bet there is lots of diversity there!
Brenda, Great moose photo. I think that moose are really interesting. And you're right they can be really nasty. We had a big bull that often comes right to the house. It is amazing how they can walk through the deep snow. Hope you are having a great week.
Gary, Wow, I'll bet you used caution when you knew he was around!
