Blog theft! Content theft! Image theft!

Tuesday, 1/11/11 Noon Eastern on Social Media Edge Radio

The topic can turn toxic and quickly. There aren't two schools of thought there are dozens of schools of thought. If you've been online very long and have actually created any original content you have probably had your content quoted, "borrowed" or just outright stolen. When you've been online as long as some of my connections and I it has happened many times. If you are a JavaScript coder you can expect to have almost everything you ever create to be annexed in to someone's project. How you react may be the measure of your value of your social equity.

With a Vegas based, high-roller attorney adopting a sue first and go for all the blood attitude how will this change the game? If I were at Google, Microsoft or Yahoo with any authority I would hit the firm with every type of lawsuit I could think of - not because I don't think they have a very distorted view of what is and what should be but because their actions, if taken seriously, are challenging even Google's authority under fair use to republish SEO blurbs from search matches.

Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Noon Easter we will be discussing piracy, plagiarism, content protection, copyright, IP theft and more on Social Media Edge Radio (Blog Talk Radio's Number 1 show on the topic of Social Media.)

What if I got all livid because a "Social Media Guru" in the RE net recently started talking about a "Social Media Safari" when I have been doing that for months? Should I freak and just fire off some nasty, accusatory blog posts? Should I phone up my very viscous attorney and legally stab the guy between the eyes? Or should I be content in myself knowing that I may have inspired someone to more greatness?

My podcasts and videos turn up on blogs and websites all over the place. MY WORK! And I love it! I love when my entire blog posts get "reblogged" on AR. That's a TOTAL "theft" of my work. Why would I like it? Tune in and I will let you know in no uncertain terms. Plain English.

Recently a man named Ted Williams, you've heard of him, was "discovered" by a reporter in Columbus, OH. His turn around has been amazing. The Dispatch, copyright owner of the video, posted the video of the first encounter on their site. It was almost immediately reposted to YouTube where it received over 6,000,000 hits in just a matter of hours. Hits to the Dispatch's version? Less than 2000 after 5 days.

The argument is not about the Dispatch's claim to copyright the argument is that without this video being on YouTube where it went viral that man could still be homeless, not reunited with his family, and America would have been shorted of a heart warming holiday story. The video on YouTube has been shut down.

The dispatch asked YouTube to shut the video down and point visitors to their website. YouTube (property of Google) ignored them. Thankfully. Let's talk about FAIR USE and when it is employed. Your opinions, right or wrong, are welcomed.

I know some of you think you're right and others think you're not. We're going to debate discuss it for about 30 minutes of the 1 hour show so this is your chance to get your voice out there. In light of recent posts I would expect one or two people to want to speak up.

Join me, Jason Crouch, Jeremy Blanton and (maybe) Mike Mueller LIVE at Noon Eastern Social Media Edge Radio and get in the chat room where it happens live!

I started writing on Active Rain in 2006 when I was representing the mortgage industry. I am no longer in that industry and many of the older posts contain outdated information. Please do not contact me for LENDING or MORTGAGE questions but rather contact a licensed mortgage professional from your area. I have always been in marketing and branding and that is still what I do. Thanks for reading!

It was a good show today... the part of it I was able to listen to before my other "work" got in the way.  It is an interesting topic.
