Why are Personal Photos a Big No No?

By
Home Stager

Why would I, your Stager, want to remove a photograph of these cute little boys?

They're your family and you are proud of them.

The photo has special meaning to you.

What's wrong with it?

It fits in with all the other photos on the wall and on the tables and/shelves.

You are right, they are cute. But they are also a distraction. The Buyer should be focused on the features of your home not the family photos. Your Buyer should remember the feature they loved the best about the house, not how cute your family was.

When Staging a home we aim to de-personalize the home so that the Buyer can see their lifestyle fitting into your home.

We want them focused on how they will use the space from the moment they arrive.

Items like photos, trophies, religious icons and diplomas make the Buyer focus on you and how you use the space.

All those small frames sitting on shelves and table tops mean nothing to the Buyer. They only form visual clutter just like other 'stuff'.

Your wall of memories may also be too busy for the space and bring the wall in, shrinking the room or hall or stairway.

Remember, our goal is to make the Buyer form an emotional link to the home. Their memory of your home should not be how cute your family is but how the house fits their needs.

Ok I like how you put it that those photos could be a "distraction". I always thought that the "de-personalization" word was too hard. Distraction could be a better way to explain to my seller. Best regards!

Janice- I agree with what Susan (#1) said.. I like the word distraction rather depersonalization.  And isn't that just what it is... all of the personal photos not only can clutter the space but the buyer can't help but focus on them rather than the house.

Thanks Susan. It is important to keep the buyer's focus on the house.

Kathy, it is all about their focus isn't it. They should be focused on the features of the home not the sellers.

Janice - Great blog. I have had a client ask me to instead photoshop all pictures out of photos of her interior and that she would take them down if an appointment was made.

Yes the boy is sure cute but did you invite people for family dinner or they are here to buy the house? A second spent on family pictures or other personal objects is the second taken out fromvaluble time when buyers suppose to make their decision.

Wow Garrigus that seems like  a lot harder than just taking them down while the house is on the market.

Very True Anna!

So do I Tori! I was just in a home where all the art work was family photos.
