The Nines Team in Lodi

The rainy season is upon us and for those of us living in the Delta areas of the Central Valley in California we should be paying particular attention to some of our car-cleanliness habits.  Often the mud and grime of a rainy road isn’t really “stuck” on our vehicles and it’s a real easy thing to just take the hose and flush it off.

The Nines Team in LodiHowever, I noticed some folks today cleaning their cars in the cool but sunny afternoon.  The “goop” products they were using are chemical compounds designed to remove the “gunk” that builds up in wheel wells and side panels.  If you number yourself among those that need to “keep it clean” please read the label and make sure the products you are using are bio-degradable and water supply safe.

Please remember that those drains that are only a few feet from where you are working … lead directly to the Delta water ways.  If you need to do some chemical cleaning on your car, please use professional sites that have recycling resources … and keep our water clean!

Living and working in Lodi, California – the real estate we buy and sell are all directly or indirectly linked to our Delta Waterways … The recreational quality and usefulness of the wetlands … can only be protected by people like us …. Please wash with care!

I love the title on your post and the message, Jack! I've never seen a sign like that on a storm drain but think more towns and cities should use that. You are so right. Pollution is largely a choice. You've written this post so eloquently. Thank you!

I agree - all municipalities should think about adding those signs!  A lot of people don't give it a thought!

Jack: These kind of efforts by a large number of people can have a big effect, as can negligence in small ways by a large number.

Susan - A neighboring community here, Stockton, hs the same message painted on the curbs by the drains.  So the reminders can be fairly inexpensive ...

Matt - As you say, small efforts by large numbers ... it seems sometimes we can get in the "why aren't the big guys doing something" mode and just "give up!"

Jack - Another thought would be that people play in the Delta.  They are water skiing, wind surfing,  wake boarding, fishing, sailing and during those really hot days swimming.  I personally do not want to play in someone else's gunk that definitely is not a good thing.  Thanks for the blog.

Steve - as you say ... other peoples' gunk.  I get concerned when I read about the contamination of some of the east coast rivers that have generations of cleanup up work to do ... that can happen to us here if we're not careful!

Such a good point.  If everyone took that responsibility on, whew (would be super awesome).  Those drains lead to somewhere no matter where you are & being conscious of that is important!!!

Tina - It's the awareness ... we often act without considering the consequences ... we're being unthoughtful or intentional in the actions ... just not thinking about the next step!
