Addiction beyond ActiveRain - Is It Real

Recently Pat Kennedy came up with a great idea and wonderful concept in creating a contest to blog about how addicting ActiveRaincan be, and how many of us spend an unusual amount time on the platform. I took the not so serious path in responding to the task, writing about my need for a program. While it was somewhat tongue in cheek as I do spend a large amount of time in front 4 large screens getting way deeper into the workings of websites and crawlers, bots, meta tags, I am hooked. But I digress, the ActiveRain contest has been fun, however since responding to Pat's contest two articles have come out that take a much more serious look at the problem than I did.

Is it Addiction or Work

The Wall Street Journal recently came out with a piece by Elizabeth Bernstein, Your Blackberry or Your Wife. While the article does have it's humor, it does cut close to the bone and it got me wondering. Our lives seem to be playing out in front of "screens", the computer screen, the phone screen, the Kindle screen, heck the poor TV screen has been reduced to an occasional glance. Ms. Bernstein makes the case that maybe it is time technology detox. There is a great 10 signs list that Ms. Bernstein refers to, to establish a level of addiction. Luckily I can say that only two apply to me. That doesn't mean that I have my ticks, how many of us have been in a social situation when one person in the room checks their phone, what happens? The entire room picks up their phones and checks, it has become reaction, we are now Pavlovs phone dogs. Below see how much time we are really spending in front of a screen. The number thing, Social Networks/Blogs took up 23.8% of our time. Maybe this isn't so funny after all.

Rank Category Total Minutes (in billions) Share of Time
1 Social Networks/Blogs 63.5 23.8%
2 Online Games 26.1 9.8
3 Email 19.9 7.5
4 Portals 10.9 4.1
5 Videos/Movies* 10.7 4.0

Do We Have Justification

To complicate matters,Sarah Lundy recently wrote about the job opportunities and the growing need for such social media marketing guru's, as the business world is now on board, and needs people to show them the ropes. Businesses are seeing the positive bottom line in marketing through the Internet and social media. We as Realtors have figured the out already, hence our participation on ActiveRain. The success is real, Dell Computers reported  that last year it generated $3 million in sales from links from it's Twitter accounts. That is nothing to sneeze at. So does this information give us tech geeks an excuse, or does it justify our behavior?

Summary

I know for me personally the rules have changed, I am much more connected than ever before, and there are times when I think to myself, man just put it down, walk away. Then I realize I would have to pull the car over before I could do that. Seriously, all of us here at ActiveRain talk often about achieving that balance between life and work. Yes the demands in today's business world are great, but the question we need to be asking is "at what cost?" I know I will be thinking twice or three times before reaching for the phone now, at least until the new latest and greatest app comes out. Oh cool is that....

You ask a very serious question...I checked out the article and I found that three out of the ten signs of addiction apply to me.  I can live with that.  I do agree it has become a huge problem and I'm sure will get even worse.

Gerry, Well thought out and presented!  We entered Pat's contest too, but it's a fine line between TOO much connectivity and being productive.  We've clicked the Suggest.

Gerry...great presentation--so glad that I could connect today. Having addictions & knowing about them is enlightening; whether we do anything about it becomes the question.  Love the "... have to pull the car over
to do that." statement.  Good one, As always.  Keep warm or at least miss this snow.
Have a good week.

Very interesting food for thought.  One the one part, the technology is not going away so we all need to adapt, as those of us on AR seem to be doing.  On the other hand, there is a fine line as BLiz pointed out above.  Even when on vacation, I've got to check the Blackberry once in a while!  So, I am definitely an addict!  The best true "vacation" I had was when we went on a cruise last year; the phones were turned off & nothing was checked until we docked.  It was forced as the fees for the cell phone out in "international waters" were very high so it was not worth it to stay connected.  And, the world did not fall apart while I was gone!! :)

Unfortunately I think this "addiction" is not going away.  It will become the norm.  What did people do before phones.  Once those arrived they never went back to writing letters instead of calling.  T.V. as we know it will also go the way of the dinosaur.  Don't look at it as an addiction, look at it as progress.

I am addicted too but have been so busy with business lately (good right?) that my blogging has fallen off a bit.

YOU HAVE 4 LARGE SCREENS THAT YOU SIT IN FRONT OF? Yup, you need an intervention my friend.

I think I have to agree with Dell, it maybe time to get ramped up, rather than turning off. We are here to make money, market ourselves, make money. If we don't do that then we can't afford to do all the other stuff we do. Social Media has become our job, we get clients through social media without clients, we can't sell homes.

Gerry, 4 large screens is a BIG sign of addiction. No need for others. =D Yet again, good work my friend.

Having recently visited Denver's lovely aquarium and noticing how many parents walked around with video recording instruments of various types in front of their faces, I wondered how many kids would have difficulty picking their parents out of a crowd, if they didn't have an electronic toy in front of it. Kinda sad.

I admit that if I don't have access to the Internet, my phone and computer....I feel something is going on that I don't know about. I even find myself apologizing to clients when I read an email I can't act on right away.

Gerry I do not think you have an addiction.  Sounds like you see what AR offers is part of what you do to stay engaged and successful.  I choose to read AR for thirty minutes a day in the am and before going to bed at night.  It has a way of taking my mind off of distractions and focuses me.

Hi Jerry Although I am fairly new to A.R I have been having some similar feelings, after just a few months I find my self on here probably 3 hours a day by the time I read. comment and write something even if just a listing. I guess the way I look at it is technology is here to stay the world is going to keep changing weather we like it or not so it is keep up or become extinct like the rest of the Dinosaurs lol Brad

Gerry, I'm guilty of forever checking my cell phone for new messages - email, texts, facebook.  It's become pretty much a bad habbit.  And when I'm home, I'm also addicted to AR!  Great post!

Gerry:  We all have spread out & have adapted accordingly to stay in business. That's how real estate is done now but I do see your concerns. I have also had similar concerns over time spent. People always saying 'is it worth it'?  Well, when I get a transaction from it yes.  I do want to be sure that I don't forget how to connect with real living people though.

Instead of spending 4 hours at an open house I think a lot of us are spending that four hours marketing on the Internet.
