100% Biodegradable Dryer Sheets?

I only head up to WalMart 3 or 4 times a year. I have several reasons for it, mainly because I don't find their prices to be as competitive as other stores around me...but I went up there today. On a search for Bike just the right size for a 2 year old.

While I was there I decided to pick up some items I needed and one of those was Fabric Softener. I was trying to choose which one to get when this box caught my eye.

It is called Eco Select. 100% Biodegradable, Recycled Box, Free of Perfumes and Dyes, etc. It says that it is made with a Vegetable derived softening agent and a neutralizing odor control. Very interesting. It also says that buried in soil, it would be totally degraded in 21 days. WOW!

You know me, I had to buy it. A whopping $2.97- atleast 1/2 the price of the 'leading national brands'. Eco Friendly AND Cheap! That has my name all over it. By the way, they do have one with a Lavender Oil for those of you that like your scented sheets.

I tried to do some research on this product but did not find anything other than Product Reviews. All of them were really good except most did not like the fact that there were no Perfumes. I always by with no Perfumes anyhow. Maybe I can talk Target in to getting this brand.

Wow! I shop in Walmart all the time and I haven't come across this one yet.

Stephanie: Sounds like a great addition for composting!

I only get to the that store about once or twice a year and it is only because someone else wants to go there. Good to see that they are carrying a product like this. Maybe I will have to pick up a years supply when I go there next year.

I rarely use my dryer 2-3 times a year. But I think I'll look into these just in case!

Dena, how do you dry your clothes? You must have a clothes line ,huh?

I'd have to have the scented stuff. I LOVE anything with a pretty scent =) But that does sound like a great buy.

Hi Roberta, It sounds like a perfect candidate! It is made by Wausau Paper, the commercial Recycyled paper/printing company. How strange is that?

Hi Dena, What? You are lucky. I tried to dry clothes outside and they end up smelling like sweat with this humidity.

Edith, I probably won't be back until Christmas time. It seems to be the toy dept. being the main reason I go every time. Birthdays and Christmas. :)

Colorado is so warm and dry it just makes sense to hang dry clothes. And with little humidity I can hang dry just about all year. The clothes dehydrate in the winter. On occasion I will use the drier but I try to do it on cold nights. The dryer warms the house up. I'm not sure if it's the environmental thing or I'm cheap.

Stephanie, thank you so much for bringing that to our attention. Thats awesome! Our local grocery chain here is carrying Seventh Generation products and carries their own line of recycled paper towels and TP. The movement is spreading!!!!!

Dena, LOL. If we had less humidity I would try to dry clothes outside. I tried dish towels...they end up soured. Yuck. You are lucky!!

I find it so interesting that you have stores that are cheaper than Wlamart, because here Walmart is way cheaper than any of my grocery stores.

Edith, they had about 15 boxes of Lavender and 1 of the Perfume Free. I got lucky. Lavender gives me a headache. I am sensitive to so many perfumes and scents..I have to be careful.

Hi Terry, I have seen recycled products..but not 100% Biodegradable. I thought that was just amazing. Wow. Glad to hear that your area is really pushing out a lot of recycled products!

Edith, They are sometimes 3X's the price of Target. The only thing they have at a reasonable cost is their brand..and I don't care for it. There are also some cleanliness issues that I have with the store near me.

Target over here is just awesome! Cheap on most everything.

The dryer story is just part of my plan to get you and Terry to move to Colorado!

Stephanie - I'm surprised your name wasn't on it! :) I would prefer the lavender oil, personally!

Stephanie - I use my dryer sheets to clean the glass door of my shower - I wonder if this product would work - may have to check out my Wal-Mart and see if they have this new eco friendly product.

Hi Stephanie, WalMart has done a lot of PR lately on how they are going green. They are putting skylights in their newer stores, using CFLs and placing them for sale in more high visibility locations in the stores. They are also going to be pressuring their vendors to use less packaging on their products. Sounds like a good plan to me. As many of them as there are, it could have some impact.

Let us know how you like them. I am glad you ran into those before you bought the bad ones. Fabric Softener sheets are one of the most deadly toxic things people use in their home and the dryer vents are sending those fumes outside into the atmosphere, the rest stays in your clothes and pillow cases and our little ones are breathing this poison in their lungs. The most toxic vapors are when we bring our dry cleaning in the house without airing it out first, second is the dryer sheets. You can ask me anything about toxins and indoor pollution, etc. I am a glutton of info on all of that! Katerina

Good to hear about this one. I have severe chemical allergies and can't use anything with dyes or perfumes. Target makes one but I don't know how eco-friendly it is. So I will have to check this out.

Great idea. I read that one of the ingredients in the more common popular brands is a petroleum based additive. There is a warning not to use on baby's pajamas as they be more flammable. Read the warning label on the back of some common brands of fabric softener.

Stephanie remember when you put it in a landfill it is not like putting it into the ground. They have dug up hotdogs and newspapers that are decades old that have not decomposed.

I see more organic and bio-degradable stuff every time I go to the store. We have a new Walmart opening here tomorrow and I will have to see if they stock this item. Target? I am a bit jealous - we don't have a Target close by and I love that store.

We had the lavender and unscented ones in stock. I use liquid fabric softener so I didn't pick any up but it is a great option for people who use fabric softener sheets.

Stephanie: I'm so happy these major retailers are jumping on the virescent bandwagon....even if they're doing it because of gaining a different kind of "green". 'S okay....since it seems to be a win-win-win.
