Please Remove Your Shoes

By

It is customary in Hawaii to remove your shoes on the outside of someones home before entering.  If you are new to the island, you may be surprised to even see signs at the front door requesting you to leave your shoes there.

My parents also had us remove our shoes inside the back door before we went upstairs (the back door that had a mud room inside).  We never went into the living area of the house with our shoes on.  The only exception was if we went into the basement which was just inside the backdoor and immediately down the stairs.

My wife is a local girl from Hawaii and she had the same beliefs.  When I arrived in Hawaii, I was accustomed to this sort of thing and I thought it would just be natural for everyone.  Apparently, everyone did not grow up doing that.  I have found that a lot of my buyer clients had no idea that they should take off their shoes.  I have learned to give them the dress code before I pick them up so that they will have easily removable shoes.

The TV show "Million Dollar Listing" had a lot of people inside the house with shoes on.  How is it in your city?  Is there an "un-written rule" that says you only have to take them off if it is raining outside?

I run into it a lot with military clients who are new to the islands.

I try to let them know up from not to wear their combat boots.  What a painful proess having to unlace and lace their boots.

Monika and I always take our shoes off entering anyones home. It is just the way we are. When we go on a CMA the propective seller always say "you don't have to take your shoes off". This small step has helped in getting listings. They see we respect their home.

In our area most buyers won't unless they see us take ours off first.

Our motor home looks brand new inside because we never wear shoes inside either.

I have been in homes where I wouldn't want to take my shoes off.

We do unaccompanied  showings and we usually see where the home owner will leave a note asking the buyer to remove their shoes.

Thanks Jay

Here it is not customary to remove your shoes. Actually, requesting can be seen as snobbish -- had an agent request we do it on a home and as we put our shoes back on my client said "that house wasn't nice enough for this." So a possible, became a no.

However, my guess is that it depends on the climate ... taking off your shoes on Hawaii in December is a lot more pleasent than say Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin.

Jay...thanks.  Your motor home looks gorgeous from the outside.  I bet it is just as nice inside.  Making that first impression on a listing presentation by taking your shoes off is a great point.  Occasionally, homeowners will also tell me to leave them on but I always take them off.  I think it shows what kind of a person you are.

Toby....Fond Du Lac?  I haven't heard of that city for ages!  I bet the feet would get pretty cold with the shoes off huh?

So if the home is carpeted, then it is okay to just wipe your shoes on the welcome mat and walk inside?

Aloha!

I had a bad take off your shoes experience.  The seller met the buyer and I at the door.  I took off my shoes as usual.  The seller said no need and oh did I wish I hadn't.  It was the filthiest place I ever seen.

I dropped off my client and drove straight home.  Pulled off my shoes and socks in my driveway and hosed them off.  A good idea is to peak in the door before removing shoes.
