I previously wrote about the Old Dutch Village Garden ClubThis is an active club in Red Hook New York and anyone who has interest in gardening is welcomed.  I attended the September event which was about the perservation of foliage.

A couple of the ladies were former school teachers so for an hour I felt like I was back in school.  Several methods of preserving flowers and leaves were discussed.  There was also an exhibit of items made from preserved foliage.

The methods discussed were as follows:

  • Pressing
  • Air Drying
  • desiccants
  • water drying

For indepth information visit the Clemson Extension Site

These items can be used to create beautiful dry arrangements and  postcards.  We were even shown how they could be used to decorate candles.  The items you create would make wonderful gifts.

Well, I was not allowed to leave until I created a book marker using dry flowers. Here is the finished product.

At the end we had wonderful deserts with coffe and tea.  What a great way to spend a couple hours: I unwind and at the same time learn something.

Jennifer, I'm not allowed to comment on this---we don't use dried flowers although I always loved the way they looked.  And this classs sounds like fun, maybe you can make arrangements with silk as well.  Anyway, I would have been there for the dessert.  I'm glad you had  a great time!

Carole The dessert was great and it was a great time to visit.  This is a great group of ladies who are very interested in the community.

Rosario - It is a great way to preserve summer, I was amazed at some of the ideas these ladies came up with.

George - The ladies are so creative, I am like you not very good with crafts.  They did manage to get me to make a book mark which was fun.

I used to belong to a garden club and it was great fun.  I learned all about floral arrangements, as did my children and we entered every one of their competitions.

These are lovely and while I prefer fresh flowers - I do like preserving speacial occasion flowers. We had some of the flowers form my daughters wedding preserved in a frame with their invitation and a few pictures. It is a beautiful reminder of a glorious day!
