This Snow is For the Birds - Please Feed Them!

Here we go again--yet another winter storm plowing through Connecticut! Schools are already being called off (for more on this, check my recent post Is it Yet Another Snow Holiday?)   All of this snow and wind is making it difficult for birds to get their food and for the humans who feed them to refill the feeders.  So if you are able to get out your door, please try to remember that our backyard beauties need some energy right about now.  My five feeders are being emptied almost as fast as I fill them!

I rarely make it through a loaf of bread before it goes stale so I make pieces and leave them in the driveway or on our deck for the birds....they must know what the plastic bag in my hand means as they always seem to find it!

Yes, not happy about this snow.  I now need to reschedule my appt - this white stuff really gets in the way of my biz.

Chris ... Squirrels! Those thieves! No matter what I do they seem to find a way of getting to the good stuff.

Chris, I don't have boots high enough to get to the bird feeders we have set up on poles to keep the squirrels away. It will have to wait until I'm done with the shovreling then I will get some very cold and wet legs trying to feed the birds

Hi Wallace - I have never understood the term "bird brained" as birds are very smart--especially when it comes to food!

Hi Debbie - Yes this winter has been a scheduling challenge beyond compare!

Hi Rick - I have managed to foil the squirrels!

1.  Cut down all trees and branches from which they can launch onto the feeder

2.  Use many "squirrel proofing" contraptions to keep them getting up from the ground to the feeder.

3.  Give them their own feeder (but they don't share AT ALL).

4.  Rake up lots of acorns in the fall, put them in a trash can on its side next to the driveway (not visible from the driveway or road), and let them empty it through the winter--happy squirrels and fewer young oak trees to pull up in the spring!

Hi Ed - I don't have boots this high either.  I have my driveway plowed, but I shovel a walkway to my bird feeders!  : )

Love to feed the birds.  Just have to watch out for the bears around here because they love the bird food too!

Hi Debra - I don't think that my squirrel proofing would keep the bears away.  : )
