If you live in Sharon MA, the only thing you've been hearing about for the last two days is the storm that is expected to arrive tonight. Schools and companies have already announced they will be closed tomorrow.
How many inches of snow, and how much wind is unknown. Supermarkets were crowded as people went to purchase the basics like bread, milk and eggs, or the other basics like pizza, snacks and soda. Whichever shopping group you're in, take a moment and prepare your home for the storm, too.
Outside your home, make sure there is a snow shovel handy. Even if you have a snow blower, or snow removal service, you may need to clear a path to your home from the street or your driveway. The new Massachusetts "Snow Law" requires you to use reasonable care to prevent injury to those coming onto your property. Check to make sure steps, porches and walkways are not icy.
Keep a long-handle brush and ice scraper in your home in Sharon MA or on your porch so that you can clear snow off your car. Make sure the street number of your home can still be clearly seen from the street to help visitors or emergency personnel identify your house.
Inside your home, keep a plastic tray near the door for wet boots. Salt and sand carried into your home damage your hardwood floors, and your rugs. Make sure you have working flashlights, extra batteries, and candles and matches, in case the power goes out. Keep these in easy to reach locations on each floor of your home. Never leave open flames unattended. It's helpful to have a battery operated radio, too.
You may want to purchase a standard telephone that doesn't need to be plugged into an electrical outlet, but just into a phone jack. If you don't have this kind of telephone, make sure your cell phones are charged, in case you lose power.
Keep emergency phone numbers handy, too. If you lose electricity and you're without power for a length of time, or you have family members who are more affected due to their age or health, contact the Fire (781-784-1522) or Police Departments (781-784-1587). For Police, Fire or Ambulance emergencies call 9-1-1.
If you lose power, or if any wires come down outside your Sharon MA home call NSTAR Electric at 800-592-2000. Stay clear of electrical wires brought down by tree limbs. Assume downed wires are "live" and stay away.
Hopefully, the storm will be a display of winter's beauty without causing harm. Stay home, read a good book, have a cup of cocoa and enjoy the day!
