Redevelopment pauses ... but it is not forgotten

MetroPlex Stockton

No, you are not seeing double … both little and large pictures show the MetroPlex theatre complex in downtown Stockton, California.

One of the signature locations of the downtown renovation project, the MetroPlex  like other sites has been instrumental in bringing new life back to the downtown area.

Prior to the bursting “bubble” there were other development and renovation plans, all designed to make “downtown” an alternate choice opportunity for entertainment and living environments.  So for now the waterfront promenades, the retirement village, the luxury condos, the over-flowing marina slips … will all have to wait … at least for a while.

This isn’t the first time that redevelopment plans in Stockton have had to be placed on hold.  For a city at the headwater of the inland “deep channel” to the Pacific, it won’t be the first time it has had to re-invent itself.  Stockton may not be as “old” as San Francisco … but she is every bit as durable!

My favorite restaurant in that complex is Moo Moo's burger barn.  They have the best sweet potato fries :)

Stockton is making downtown a better place. Unfortunately as you note there are a lot of road blocks that slow it down. It looks a lot better than it did when I was growing up. It is good to see progress, just wish it was faster. Nice post.

Patrick - Just in the time I've lived in the area I've seen some major changes!  As new ideas and commitments move into the area, then the values and cultural changes will start enriching the community.

We’ve had a lot of stuff put on hold here, too, although they seem to be moving forward with a new central library. However, they also want to build a new 17-story city hall. And to think we’re two billion dollars in the red….

Susan - there you go, judging books by its cover!  Beneath that dusty exterior ... beats the passion of Paris ... or is it Perris?
