Sorry for the dramatic headline, but I figured it might not hurt to use the same tactic that I’ve seen others employ with regard to my email inbox.

I guess I’m just getting a bit tired of hearing self-proclaimed gurus and experts say things like, “SEO is dead” or “Facebook KO’s Google” or anything similar. The fact that YouTube receives more searches than Google, or Facebook has more traffic than Google, doesn’t mean that Google is harmed by this or going away anytime soon.  Google actually owns YouTube, in case you didn’t already know that part.

Yes, I agree that our time online has undergone a shift from old-school surfing and searching to using the internet as a primary source of entertainment and socializing, too.  This is revolutionary and terrific, and I use these new tools as much as anyone (and probably a whole lot more, in some cases).  That being said, there is not a death knell ringing for traditional SEO efforts.

I welcome any disagreement or proof to the contrary – I have an open mind on this.  Here’s a quick question for you:  If you want to find a book, or movie times, or an address, or find out about homes in another area of the country, would you visit Facebook? If you’re halfway normal, the answer is no.  You would probably start with Google.  If you’re heavily involved in social media, you might ask your friends/followers for recommendations for a good local plumber or electrician, but if you’re in a hurry, I bet you would go to Google or another search engine for this.

My point here is to be wary of those who proclaim any prevalent technology to be dead, unless of course they’re talking about digital laser discs or 8-track tapes, neither of which will make a comeback.

If someone is going against the grain, it doesn’t always mean that they’re innovative or ahead of the curve. Sometimes, they are just trying to sell you something (“Buy my new system”, “Listen to me talk”, etc.), or they just plain don’t understand the internet very well.  I see way too many emails and pitches about video being the “next big thing”.  I’ve been hearing this every year since 2007 or so.  I promise that video is important, but it’s not even a trend anymore – it’s just plain here.

I’ve been online since 1994 or 1995, and I’ve seen a lot of changes.  I started my first website in 1998 for my business, and I started blogging in 2004.  Even though I feel like I understand this stuff pretty well, I don’t consider myself to be a full-blown expert, other than in certain specialized niches.  I am not selling anything with this post, either.  :)

A few thoughts I want to share with you:

  • Google and Facebook really aren’t competitors at this point, and I don’t see that changing.
  • Facebook, Twitter and blogging are all important and useful in your marketing mix, but don’t overlook SEO.
  • YouTube may get a lot of searches, but most people aren’t going there to buy anything.  If you manage to get leads from your videos, I bet they found the video…..on Google’s organic search results.

The bottom line is that not everyone is as knowledgeable as he/she may indicate.  Sometimes, those who are respected as teachers and consultants for internet marketing and social media are simply those who are speaking loudest, or in the right place at the right time.

There are a bunch of people I respect in social media, people who “walk the talk” and whom I admire. I won’t even attempt to name them here, because I know that I will leave out someone important.  Many of them have written books on these subjects and they deserve their accolades.  Unfortunately, however, I’ve also seen a growing group of people who are proclaiming their importance and tech knowledge to anyone who will pay attention.

Just some food for thought.  Sorry if this one came across is negative.  I just really hate to see anyone being led astray.

Thanks for reading!

I guess I'm bucking the trend as I actually deleted my personal Facebook page after repeated hacks. Facebook is OK for a company page but it's not secure - you login with "http" not "https". Just type "hack Facebook" in Google and any of the 70.3 MILLION results will get you hacking profiles in minutes. This is the biggest weakness in Facebook - everything I do can be deleted, modified, or even have fake messages and information posted to my account without my knowledge. I can easily spoof my IP address and anonymously post complete lies about a competitor for instance.

On the other side of things, Google is my homepage and there's really no comparing it to Facebook as they are very different animals.

Hi Jason

My Grandpa was a Master Mechanic for years. I rememer one day a commercial came on TV advertising one wrench that would replace a whole tool box full of wrenches LOL he must of went on for 20 minutes ranting and raving about how ridiculouse that concept was and giving examples of what that paticualar wrench could not do and why. Like all things in life it take many tools to do any job.

I think there are alot of people out there using the old saying if you can't dazzel them with brilliance baffle them with bull, and your exactly right the easest way to sift through the bull is to ask your self who is profiting and how. It has been that way long before the internet. Funny how all the technical advances in the world does not change some of lifes basics. Great post I really enjoyed this one.........Brad

And the people making these claims - what's in it for them?  In many cases there may be a cleverly hidden piece of self-promotion somewhere, maybe even lead capture for an affiliate marketer.  Or it could be that I'm just getting a little jaded ;)

Google and FB are probably here for a while but always keep your eye out for the next tech tool.

There's a sucker born every minute.  Some of the SEO people are taking advantage of them.

Anybody that thinks Google is gone is nuts. In fact as computing moves more and more to the cloud Google with some combination of Chrome and Android will pose a strong challenge in the operating system market.

Hi Jason.

I have never understood how they really compete, either.

I use both!  They are both great...

Thanks for writing,

Ken

Jason, You are a smart man.  I could not agree with you more.  All these online things are different from each other & the only way that Google will be replaced is by another search engine. Bing is trying reall hard to do that, but I figure they got no chance.

Jason... you make some good points..  one thing I have learned recently.. even though video blogging hasn't taken off, it has a stronger SEO search than does regular searches and it has been proven. Just because less do it or it hasn't taken over, doesn't mean it's not as good. Overall though... my favorite one is... blogging is dead or will be dead soon.. lol In my opinion, it will never die as long as Google, Bing, Yahoo search, etc, etc are still around..as long as there is a place to search, blogging won't be dead. Some that stated this are the ones that liked facebook and or twitter because it required less writing.. and it was fun. Just my opinion.. but a good post here.   ps.. and facebook fan pages get searched with your key words... overall, content rules.. I would like to read the comments later, but damn... so tired and so behind..

Hmmm... I saw this post as "Anti-negative." Is that possible?

As for video - When I see a post or get an email that says "watch this video" I skip it. For one thing, I'm on Wild Blue satellite. That means a video might come in just fine, or it might play 5 seconds and pause for 12 - throughout the entire video.

Second, I'm a skimmer. And I haven't figured out how to skim through a video to see if I really want to spend my time with it.

As for Google... I've spent the last couple of days researching a few things, and I wish they'd quit putting link farms and pages that have nothing to do with what I typed in my search on page 1. (Sorry, that DID sound negative - it's just been frustrating!)

As for all those guys shouting gloom, doom, and destruction - they're either selling something or just want to sound important. I ignore them.

Who knew that as a Realtor I'd have to be so tech savvy? If it weren't for posts like this I'd actually be talking (and listening) to the snake oil salesmen that call me from time to time. Yikes! Thanks to all the above posts and the very good overall information!

I have to say that recently I have started several searches by going to YouTube first and avoiding Google.  I know that Google owns YouTube but as yet, Google has failed to report that YouTube is profitable.

I agree with you that facebook and google are two different animals. I could live without facebook, but google has become a necessity.

Andrew - The fact remains (as I said above) that MOST people aren't going to YouTube to buy anything, and I would be willing to wager that the percentage of real estate purchases that originate from YouTube is almost zero, unless they found the video via Google.
