There is a proposal to acquire along the Intracoastal Waterway a 5.2 acre plat of land to develop a public park, the first ever in the town. The park is proposed to include fishing piers, kayak/canoe launching, walking trail, picnic shelter and overlook facilities. The 5.2 acre plat of land includes 1200 feet of waterfront on the Intracoastal Waterway and Mary's Creek which in the plan will be utilized for the fishing pier.

The site is located on an impressive point along the Intracoastal Waterway near the old Sunset Beach pontoon bridge site with resplendent views of the waterway, nearby marshes, and the barrier island. The majority of the site is open grassed areas wit large live oak trees that will remain preserved in the plan.

With limited public assess in the Sunset Beach area for pier fishing, the economic benefits have been anticipated to attract fisherman to the area along with a positive impact for area stores, restaurants, and lodging. The project will generate substantial social benefits to the residents as well as the visitors of the area.

This proposed plan is an extraordinary opportunity for the Town of Sunset Beach to preserve a charming natural resource and at the same time, address the lack of of public water access by providing an additional boat ramp site.

The proposed plan will also include a grassed amphitheater, playground, a veteran's memorial, and restrooms. Summer concerts will be moved from the Village Park location with the anticipated with the construction of the amphitheater with band shell.

This can be the State's and Town's opportunity to form an affiliation and preserve at least one of the quickly vanishing pieces of land on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Sunset Beach, North Carolina.

Frank and Karen:

A lovely PR piece for the Town's purchase of Gore's white elephant [you omitted the price, however -- always important in a recession, when houses are being foreclosed upon all over Sunset Beach.]  My questions are, why you, and why now?  Is this the opening round of a new park-buying campaign?  Are you the designated stalking horse for [parties unnamed]?
