Since the average homeowner moves every 7 years, your number might be coming up. To get a checklist simply Google "Moving checklist" and choose. Print and start your checklist. Follow the next seven tips to save you time and money.
1) Start collecting moving boxes from work, businesses, friends, etc., collecting various sizes. If space is limited and you are not moving soon, consider breaking down the boxes and store flat until needed. Most moving companies sell boxes. Costco sells boxes in varous sizes for about $50.00.
2) Budget money for a moving company, if you plan to hire help. Call ahead, compare prices, and set-up an appointment ahead of time keeping in mind spring to fall season is busier than winter.
3) Pack and label your boxes in advance. This simple step makes you efficient, as you concentrate on moving not packing on moving day. You do not want your moving party tied up waiting to pack items.
4) Plan a pizza party for your moving team. Invite family, friends or hire a day worker from a temporary employment agency like Manpower or Labor Ready. Give plenty of notice to your helpers and send out a reminder postcard or call a couple of days before move day. The more people you invite, the greater chances helpers will show up. Many helpers makes the work load lighter. Offer to help to others next time they move, as a moving credit and incentive to help you. Don't forget to send thank you cards.
5) Consider purchasing, renting, or borrowing a hand cart or dolly. A dolly will make you more efficient as you are able to carry several boxes at one time and lessens the strain on your back.
6) Don't forget your gloves. I find a good pair of leather gloves works best for the heavy, rough or sharp items. Your hands will thank you. Take a short time to stretch and warm up before lifting anything heavy.
7) Consider renting a large moving truck for one trip rather than having to make several trips using a smaller moving truck. As a rule of thumb, pack your heavy, bulky items toward the front of the bed, stacking lighter items on top of heavier items. Pack securely using good staking formation packing tightly to minimize movement during transport.
Using a standard moving list and utilizing the helpful hints above will help you in your next move. Happy moving!
Cesar, hopefully I'll be using those tips soon. I think the pizza is a good idea. Nice reward.
