Let It Snow... and Snow... and Snow
There is something to say for the hush that permeates our little part of the world during a heavy snowfall. It underlines, for me, the whole sensibility of winter: the drawing in, the cozy interior life, the feeling that the world is having a much-needed rest.
Here in Shelton, Connecticut, we already had about a foot of snow on the ground, with some deeper piles left behind by the snowplows. Overnight, we received another 18-20 inches of snow, which sculpted itself into fantastical shapes as it covered homes, cars, trees and other piles of snow, and then got blown all over the place.
After a deep night's sleep - aided by that wonderful quiet - I woke to what was almost a whiteout. When it subsided, this is what I saw on our back deck:
Although the plows had the main streets of our condo development cleared through the night, it took much of the day to get the driveways fully plowed and the pathways shoveled. Luckily, Herb and I had planned to stay home all day anyway.
Late this afternoon, our front path was shoveled, and we were stunned at the height of the snow:
Tomorrow is a busy day, so I'll plan on bundling up and getting out there, taking a look at snow angels and snowmen, and enjoying the gifts that Winter brings.
Which includes more snow in the forecast for Saturday evening...
