(post #10 in the "Why I Love Laramie" series)

Predictability.  Some claim to be annoyed by the very idea of it, yet who doesn't take at least some comfort in the mundane and expected.  Things like the practice emergency sirens that startlingly blare at 10:00 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month or even knowing when to switch lanes lane ahead of time so you don't end up in a mandatory turn lane at the next intersection.  Just the other day I realized one of the checkers at a local grocery store had been checking there as long as I had been shopping there -23 years! A predictable friendly face.  And so it is with the wind in Laramie.  You can predict that it will nearly always blow and from which direction.  Annoying?  Yes, often it is.  But the wind in your face is also one of those predictable Laramie things that lets you know you are still alive and get to face yet another gloriously windy day.

In the picture below, the left of the picture is west, the right of the picture is east.
Can you tell from which way the wind usually blows?

Not only can you tell which way the wind blows when you look at the trees, but the people are also a good guide. Men pull their hats down and kind of lean into the wind, kind of the opposite of trees. With the wind at our back, we lift the hat up a bit, and raise our outlook, too.

First time visitor here - nice job on the photography on your blog. You might consider posting to some other groups to let more of us enjoy your work.

Hi Brenda - You brought back a childhood memory with this post!  Practice emergency sirens used to blare once a month on Saturdays (I think it was 11 A.M.), but that hasn't happened in many a year.

Chris,  I knew we couldn't be the only town that did that!  Funny thing is that when we had a real emergency in May of 2009 (mini tornado) the sirens either didn't go off or couldn't be heard, whoops!

Brenda - I even remember the "duck and cover" drills back when I went to school.  The sirens would go off and everyone went under their desks, oh wait how much good would that have done anyway?  Let's see small desk, large atomic bomb...I will have to thing about that one.  Instead of duck it should have been roast goose.  Thanks for the blog.

Brenda,  One thing that I don't miss about Laramie is the wind. It really does affect the trees and people. I seem to remember walking bent over a lot of the time.

Gary, I'll bet you did!  Those wind chill charts are essential here when getting ready to go out!
