At this point I hope that everyone has heard of a zip file. How about an rar file? A daa file? Well they all fall under the category of file compression applications.

Believe it or not file compression was originally considered a virus because the definition of a computer virus is something that alters the content of a data file. In this case its a good thing :)

File compression is the practice of packaging a file or files to use less disk space. Use the CNET Download.com File Compression listings to find the best compression utilities for archiving your important files. For more File Compression resources, visit the most popular software for data compression or the newest releases in file compression.

Richard, compression programs are a lifesaver. I have been using them ever since I had my Commodore 64 back in the 80s.  I currently use WinRAR a lot.
