Kiplinger's Best Values in Public Colleges Ranks Maryland #5

January has been a great month for Maryland, when it comes to rankings for public education.

The same week Maryland public schools were ranked #1 in the nation by Newsweek Magazine, Education Week, and the College Boards, we find the University of Maryland ranked #5 on Kiplinger's List of Best Values in Public Colleges.

These rankings are based on a combination of academics and affordability, using data provided by Peterson's/Nelnet from more than 500 public four-year schools.  Academic quality - measured by SAT/ACT scores, admission and retention rates, student-faculty ration and graduation rates - counts for nearly 2/3 of the score.  Affordability - determined by the cost of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, books, out-of-state costs, debt at graduation, and other factors - is used to complete the score.

SharinUniversity of Maryland (copyright MWODA)g the limelight with the University of Maryland in the Top Ten on this prestigious list are the following public higher ed institutions:

  1. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  2. University of Florida
  3. University of Virginia
  4. College of William and Mary
  5. University of Maryland, College Park
  6. SUNY Binghamton
  7. SUNY Geneseo
  8. University of Georgia
  9. University of Wisconsin, Madison
  10. University of Washington

Check out this INTERACTIVE TOOL to learn which public colleges and universities ranked in the Top 100 nationwide.

When I did that, I found St. Mary's College at #40, Salisbury University at #60, Towson University at #78 and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, at #91.  Congratulations, Maryland!

Now... if only our football and basketball teams would do as well in the rankings...  Go Terps!

Margaret, Great to see Maryland on the list.  A brother-in-law and sister-in-law both graduated from there.  I'm personally biased to another school in Maryland that pays you to attend AND guarantees you a minimum five year employment contract when you graduate :)  Go NAVY!!!  Bill

Alan, they have come a long way.  When I wss college age, UMD was kind of a joke... Definately more about partying than learning.

Bill and Liz - Laughing out loud here.  Yes, but that's a LOT harder to get into.  Good benefits at your alma mater, unless you consider the risks of military life.

Margaret, Congrats to Maryland and all of the schools that made the list. And I smile with pride (for some reason) that Washington also made the list. But they are screaming about short-falls here, so perhaps the value is transitory.

That's great news;  between the high rankings for it's public schools and now this, Maryland is definitely a force with which to be reckoned.

Glenn, you're right, it is. Congratulations!  I think all the states are having to cope with funding, so Washington is not alone there.

Susan - Maryland and Virginia are both in the top five of rankings for affordable public higher ed and for our public schools.  Anyone moving to the DC area has two great options, when it comes to education (I'll be watching for a post on this topic from you..)

Ellen - It IS.  Great to hear from you.  Say "Hi" to Jim for me.

Mike - Thanks, it's always nice to hear from you - and to see your beautiful photographs.

Pat -'Can't claim any credit for the slide show other than finding the link to it, but I do think it's nice to view some of that info on the top 10 schools on the list.  I'm sure that Georgetown, George Washington, American, and Catholic Universities in DC are at the top of some other "best" lists.

The U of MD is my alma mater and I love the school.  It has a fantastic computer science program and engineering dept.  I'm happy to see how we rank in the US!

Scott, I see that Texas has some schools in the Top 100 - Texas A&M and UT at Dallas.  Surprised UT Austin isn't on the list.  My daughter went to grad school there and loved both the University and Austin.

Larry - It's nice to report good news once in a while, isn't it?  By the way, congratulations on topping 50,000 points!

Dan - Even though I have less than zero to do with UMD's success, I'm still feeling some pride here...

Margaret,

Very impressive.  Our public schools are not so hot, but happy to see UGA on the top ten list of colleges.  Our HOPE scholarship from the GA lottery program is a big driving force for this.

All the best, Michelle

Bob and Bonnie - Too funny!  Yep, I think that terrapin passed quite a few mascots on its way to #5.

Michelle - Congratulations to Georgia for making the Top Ten.  Success is contagious, so maybe the school superintendent will pick up the pace for public schools.
