This quintessential restoration/remodel, in Seattle Washington, of a 1920 farm house looks strikingly similar to the original design. Don't be fooled by looks alone this house has a definite green undertow.  The innovative green strategies are rooted in a whole-house philosophy of building.  Each separate building component enhances the overall design.  For instance the R-29 insulated walls and quadruple glazed windows allow for a smaller more efficient heating source.  Taking advantage of the homes southern exposure more natural daylighting was created by increase size of windows and raising the ceiling heights to 9' allowing the windows to placed 6" inches higher letting the natural daylight to go deeper into the rooms helping to reduce lighting costs.

It would have been much easier to level the existing house, which is part of a four-home enclave of green homes, then to carefully dismantle and reuse the old wood that came out of the house. This is perhaps one of the greenest forms of construction-retooling, reusing and minimizing materials and resources in the process of making the existing structure healthier and more energy efficient.
