PEC, Parents Educating Children Celebrates 25 Years Of HomeSchooling In Florida

By
Real Estate Agent with The Gasset Group & Get It Done For Me Virtual Services 13253167-SA00

Florida is one of the states where you are allowed to home school your children and not only that but through years of lobbying our State House and Congress we have made extremely positive improvements in parents rights to home school their children and in the legal protection to do so. There was a time when parents would go to jail if they did not entrust their children to a public school system.

Saturday September 15, 2007 at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach adjacent to Wellington Florida PEC celebrated 25 years with a country style picnic at the Alligator Pavilion. It was still quite warm this time of year but we had fun getting together. The kids spent most of the time in organized relays or just free style playing on the popular playground areas next to the pavilion. The money for the food was raised by selling tickets for $3 per person. No tax dollars go to homeschooling families. In fact, all home school families pay taxes for public schools in their property tax bills here in Florida. The homeschool organizations do not want tax benefits for homeschooling because that would lead to state controls over homeschools.

PEC 25th year celebration Alligator Pavilion Homeschool event Okeeheelee Park Florida

We had over 200 people show up for this event that starting 25 years ago with two moms sitting at a kitchen table trying to decide how they were going to educate their children at home. We have come a long way from hiding out and not going outside during school hours.  I have homeschooled 5 children all the way from K to completion of high school and now we are home schooling our last child who is now 5 years old.

Cydnee- Yep, there is lots of support here. Tristan goes to a Nature class once a week at a Christian camp on 20 acres, it is so cool. He goes to gymnastics and has play times with other home schooled kids at our monthly support meetings. We also have a mom's night out once a month. Katerina

Katerina, what "controls" does the state exert? Do they select textbooks? Do they administer achievement tests? I like the idea of homeschool, but just exactly does it mean?

I will write some posts about it. We have lobbied the state of Florida for years. This is the statute now:

You must fill out a form with the school board with an intent to home school. You must refile this notice each year your child is home schooled. Once a year the parent has a choice of 3 things to meet the requirements of the statute. 1. You can have your child take the achievement tests the state has the public schools take, or 2. you can have a certified teacher evaluate your child or 3. you can have a licensed psychologist evaluate your child.

That is all that is mandated. Parents are free to choose their own curriculum from whatever source they choose. The state provides no assistance, no money, no books, etc. Nada. In this area most parents use Christian textbooks from christian private school sources. I will post about the different choices.

One of my daughters started college at the age of 14. She is graduating at the age of 19 from Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach Florida. She was home schooled by me most of her life. Katerina

Katerina, I didn't know you were a home schooling mom. Most of my friends here and at church home schooled their children. There are a number of support groups and small groups that meet on Fridays for field trips and teaching subjects the moms aren't comfortable with . I didn't realize Florida was so home school friendly.

In Saline, the home school kids can take any class the want at the hight school, so some go in for language, physics so I guess we're sorta home school friendly.

So do you have 5 or 6 ? Mike and I have 5.

Missy Caulk- Ann Arbor Real Estate

Missy- I gave birth to 6 children. My oldest is 28; my youngest is 5. 5 were from my first marriage, my 5 year old is Nestor's and mine.  I have 2 step children from Nestor's first marriage. So altogether there are 8 now. But I homeschooled 6, still home schooling one, the 5 year old. That is great that they are so home school friendly in Ann Arbor and Saline. So you have 5 children? Katerina I think it is so great that you have so many homeschool resources in FL. NM has lobbied hard for less controls by the state over homeschools and we have come a long way and are doing well. After proving that our kids scored better than the public schools on tests we no longer have to test our kids.

Ashley- Congratulations on coming this far. That is a real victory. I just read a very disturbing story about Parents in Germany are in jail for home schooling their children and the children get taken away from them. They believe that home schooled children will ruin their society. I guess they can't handle anyone not being brainwashed by the government. Katerina

Katerina - I am speechless( trust me it does not happen often). 8 kids and 6 -homeschooled! Is there a monument somewhere in Florida - "dedicated to Katerina and Nestor -who do the impossible". I have 4 kids -oldest 32, youngest - 14 and these give me the run for the money.  But 8? OK, I know what to do -I'll start a petition to award you a medal for bravery.

Faina- Thanks so much! Nestor likes to tease me with, ' I was crazy to marry a woman with 6 kids'. No, it is fun. Yep, it is a lot of work. I had 5 kids all before I was 30, so it was much easier. My 5 year old who I had when I was 42 is taking me for a run for my money.... I get exhausted with him and wonder how did I ever do it with 5 under the age of  8! Thanks so much for your award! Katerina,

We have several families in my son's scout troop that home school.  I don't think I have the patience for it - I applaud anyone who is successful at homeschooling.

Scouting is one of the ways my boys got a lot of socialization while they were homeschooled. Thank you. I don't have patience for public schools. By the time my friends get their kids ready for school, lunches, money, homework, clothes, driving them to school and then picking them up and then helping in school; well I've got my homeschool done in 2 hours! And my kids never had homework! Katerina
