Consumers, businesses, individuals, agents, etc. may enjoy the "hits" on Facebook.  However, Google is still, IMO, the absolute master of "SEARCH". 

Google's "SEARCH" mastery is little understood and less appreciated, but it changed the world.

Sorry for the dramatic headline, but I figured it might not hurt to use the same tactic that I’ve seen others employ with regard to my email inbox.

I guess I’m just getting a bit tired of hearing self-proclaimed gurus and experts say things like, “SEO is dead” or “Facebook KO’s Google” or anything similar. The fact that YouTube receives more searches than Google, or Facebook has more traffic than Google, doesn’t mean that Google is harmed by this or going away anytime soon.  Google actually owns YouTube, in case you didn’t already know that part.

Yes, I agree that our time online has undergone a shift from old-school surfing and searching to using the internet as a primary source of entertainment and socializing, too.  This is revolutionary and terrific, and I use these new tools as much as anyone (and probably a whole lot more, in some cases).  That being said, there is not a death knell ringing for traditional SEO efforts.

I welcome any disagreement or proof to the contrary – I have an open mind on this.  Here’s a quick question for you:  If you want to find a book, or movie times, or an address, or find out about homes in another area of the country, would you visit Facebook? If you’re halfway normal, the answer is no.  You would probably start with Google.  If you’re heavily involved in social media, you might ask your friends/followers for recommendations for a good local plumber or electrician, but if you’re in a hurry, I bet you would go to Google or another search engine for this.

My point here is to be wary of those who proclaim any prevalent technology to be dead, unless of course they’re talking about digital laser discs or 8-track tapes, neither of which will make a comeback.

If someone is going against the grain, it doesn’t always mean that they’re innovative or ahead of the curve. Sometimes, they are just trying to sell you something (“Buy my new system”, “Listen to me talk”, etc.), or they just plain don’t understand the internet very well.  I see way too many emails and pitches about video being the “next big thing”.  I’ve been hearing this every year since 2007 or so.  I promise that video is important, but it’s not even a trend anymore – it’s just plain here.

I’ve been online since 1994 or 1995, and I’ve seen a lot of changes.  I started my first website in 1998 for my business, and I started blogging in 2004.  Even though I feel like I understand this stuff pretty well, I don’t consider myself to be a full-blown expert, other than in certain specialized niches.  I am not selling anything with this post, either.  :)

A few thoughts I want to share with you:

  • Google and Facebook really aren’t competitors at this point, and I don’t see that changing.
  • Facebook, Twitter and blogging are all important and useful in your marketing mix, but don’t overlook SEO.
  • YouTube may get a lot of searches, but most people aren’t going there to buy anything.  If you manage to get leads from your videos, I bet they found the video…..on Google’s organic search results.

The bottom line is that not everyone is as knowledgeable as he/she may indicate.  Sometimes, those who are respected as teachers and consultants for internet marketing and social media are simply those who are speaking loudest, or in the right place at the right time.

There are a bunch of people I respect in social media, people who “walk the talk” and whom I admire. I won’t even attempt to name them here, because I know that I will leave out someone important.  Many of them have written books on these subjects and they deserve their accolades.  Unfortunately, however, I’ve also seen a growing group of people who are proclaiming their importance and tech knowledge to anyone who will pay attention.

Just some food for thought.  Sorry if this one came across is negative.  I just really hate to see anyone being led astray.

Hi Lenn. Facebook has its place but Google (and Active Rain) win hands down. To me anyway.... I've noticed a push for Facebook but I like more control. If they decide to charge for their service well I have my blogs. They may very well monetize their business that way. I do not want to find out so I focus on blogging more and the phone. It is a new toy though... for many people LOL Shiny and new. For now anyway.

I think Jason is right about Google. The company is pretty much involved with every thing we do on the internet. SCARY! Google will be finished when Google is ready to be finished...

Lenn - You present a great argument to counter the recent assertions of Google's untimely demise, and I hope you're right.  As a relative newcomer to blogging and SEO, I've yet to master any of it; it would be dreadful if I had to begin again :-)

Hi Lenn,

I think that a lot of people hope for a magic bullet.  Facebook is in many ways easier than coming up with rich content for blog posts and the like.  But the bottom line is that the blog is the centerpiece.  You can perhaps lead people to your blog via facebook or twitter - but there is no substitution for posting content.

Lynn... Jason makes some good points..  one thing I have learned recently.. even though video blogging hasn't taken off, it has a stronger SEO search than does regular blogging and it has been proven. Just because less do it or it hasn't taken over, doesn't mean it's not as good. Overall though... my favorite one is... blogging is dead or will be dead soon.. lol In my opinion, it will never die as long as Google, Bing, Yahoo search, etc, etc are still long as there is a place to search, blogging won't be dead. Some that stated this are the ones that liked facebook and or twitter because it required less writing.. and it was fun. Just my opinion.. but a good reblog here.  thanks  ps.. and facebook fan pages get searched with your key words... overall, content rules..

Lana.  Facebook has monetized the site with advertising, which is what Google did with AdWords and AdSense.  They can't charge membership because it would be the end of their popularity.  The public believes that the Internet should be FREE. 

Paul.  I agree.  The reach of Google is little understood but awesome.

John.  Since I was on the Internet before Google, I've watched it from the beginning.  I've watched FB and Twitter too.  They are not in the same league for business generation, IMO.  FB and Twitter boast huge numbers, but that's rather like "hits" on a web site.  Meaningless, if you are using a site for business generation.

Ruthmarie.  Indeed.  Fact is, it is Google that has made ActiveRain such a success.

Tim.  We have just begun to scratch the surface of the potential of Google.

Jeff.  Content rules is right.  Google loves content, takes the content, indexes the content and let's you open your front doors to consumers who want what your content provides.  As for video???  Hate it, hate it, hate it.

Evelyn.  You are a marketing genius.  Same here.  I don't use toys in my work.  I use serious advertising media and that's Google.

Hi Lenn. Lately I read about Goldman Sachs and how they've stopped taking orders for Facebook stock even limited the amount that some investors ordered. "Goldman Sachs will supposedly collect from new Facebook investors upfront fees of 4%, plus 5% of any gains as well as a private-placement fee for arranging the deal." This is big and am sure their ads will increase.

I also read in Business Week that they may charge for uploading pictures and charge a nominal fee for ad-free advertising. All speculation of course and there was a huge backlash when the rumor was going around that Facebook would be charging for their service. Once they do many users will probably flee. Content-wise I prefer content that is over the 420 character limit at Facebook.

Lana.  Good information.  Facebook isn't going to charge for their service any more than Google will be charging for listing or searching. 

Goldman Sachs will make a mint on the underwriting.
