Discover Uptown Charlotte NC - Historic Fourth Ward

Uptown Charlotte NCHistoric Fourth Ward, comprised of the the northwest quadrant of Charlotte's Uptown area which was resurrected in the mid-1800s, was one of the more prosperous areas of town, providing homes to local merchants, physicians and ministers.  The First Methodist, First Presbyterian, and St. Peters Episcopal Churches are all part of the Historic Fourth Ward and by the 1900's, became nearly desolate as many residents moved to the 'suburbs' of Dilworth and Myers Park.

Many of the beautiful Victorian homes were either destroyed or became commercial buildings and by 1970, Fourth Ward had fallen into a terrible state of neglect. I remember driving through this area and not even taking a second look!  Now, the skyline is simply stunning as the late 20th century brought complete renovation and restoration to Fourth Ward which is now a thriving part of Charlotte's Uptown.

Uptown Charlotte NC

The area, located between Trade Street to the south, 11th Street to the north, Graham Street to the west and Tryon Street to the east, is considered the residential district of Uptown Charlotte.  History abounds at every corner in Fourth Ward and even now, new construction (growing vertically, of course) is still underway in Charlotte NC's Uptown Fourth Ward area.

Plan a visit to the Center City and take in all of the sites, watch a professional basketball or football game, dine in style at any of Charlotte's exquisite restaurants.  While visiting the city, be sure to stay in the luxurious Dunhill Hotel, another segment of Charlotte's history.

Uptown Fourth Ward Charlotte NCThe Dunhill Hotel is a historic landmark surrounded by the beauty and everyday activity of modern day Charlotte NC.  This hotel is an ideal choice for tourists and business visitors alike, and is mere steps from the Bobcat's Arena (Time Warner Cable Arena), NC Blumenthal Center for the Performing Arts, Spirit Square, Discovery Place, Reid's Fine Foods, Overstreet Mall and many popular museums, theatres and restaurants.

Don't forget about Fourth Ward Park while you're visiting!  Settler's Cemetery is also a history lesson in Charlotte Uptown Fourth Ward.  Just across the street from the historic cemetery stands the popular 34-story Avenue Condominium complex--the new certainly meets the old in Uptown Charlotte's historic Fourth Ward.

Debe,

Great to see you back in the rain. I don't know much about Charlotte, but the Fourth Ward looks like a great place to live and hang.

Hi Debe - I love the Fourth Ward area!  I have a love/hate relationship with your Charlotte Posts...makes me homesick for the CITY!  You always do such a great job featuring your area neighborhoods.  Have a great Saturday afternoon!

Hi Debe... somehow I suspect that this is the area of Charlotte I would want to live in if I moved there.  Perhaps I should consider it!  :-)
