It's not really new. Some faiths have had new homes blessed for centuries. The foreclosure crisis has merely helped to resurrect old practices. House Blessings.
Call it post-sale staging: helping your buyers get rid of the bad vibes in their newly bought foreclosure home. After all, the house has more than likely been the scene of trouble, arguments, and much unhappiness. Enter a practitioner of ritual cleansing to give the house a good psychic scrub and the new owners are assured that the same unfortunate fate will not befall them. For some real estate practitioners, it's also business opportunity: Ringing bells break up negative energy, waving iron to keep evil spirits away.... a room by room sprinkling of Kosher salt dissolved in water... "Residue, residue, residue is in this house and it has to come OUT"!
Some real estate agents are trying it to help move unsold homes too.
(Though I have never ritually sprinkled salty water about, I freely admits to have planted St. Joseph upside down in more than a few front yards. I dare you to admit to the same.)
