Has the iPad finally found its match? Preview of the Xoom

Zoom PBS Show from the 70'sIf you haven't heard yet, Motorola recently unveiled its new Android tablet. Though I'm not normally an early adopter of new devices, I can't stop thinking about the Xoom.  And like any good child of the 70's I have the theme song running through my head:  "I wanna Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, Zoom!"  Come on, you know you want to sing along!

Seriously, the Xoom looks expertly poised to give the iPad a run for its money.  From the slightly bigger screen, to the 4g capacity, from the front and back video capable cameras to HMDI outlet for sharing content to your HDTV, this is one amazing machine.  Still not sure I'll be buying on the first day or even in the first week, but I can't wait to get my hands on one, and I think I'll be buying sooner rather than later.

Take a look at the video.  Specs are posted below.  See more on the official xoom site.  Watch another xoom video.

Tara - Looks really cool! I've seen several potential competitors for the iPad that are hitting the market, but the Zoom looks to be a frontrunner. I think the price point will determine much of its success.

Jason, you're so right.  That's one of the few things that hasn't been disclosed yet.  For me, I haven't purchased a new computer in 4 years, so I'm due for an upgrade.  Since my computer still serves my needs, this is a logical choice for me.  I see it as far more than a toy; I think it will allow me to be more productive.  Hopefully they won't price it too high!

Tara thanks for highlighting this tablet - I'm anxious to get a tablet one day - hoping this year and this looks like a nice one. I see boygenius did a hands on video at CES of it which is ineteresting to see.

PS - BGR is giving a heads-up at $699.99 price point (ouch) I want a tablet but this is a little outside my budget. Glad 2011 looks like a year of the tablet with some good competition

That price actually doesn't surprise me. I was thinking around $800. I guess I'm looking at it as another computer, and since I haven't purchased one in 4 years I'm willing to spend more than I normally would. I figure I'll be happy enough with a new tablet that I won't need to upgrade my phone anytime soon, and I can use my laptop for another year if all goes well. Plus, our office just gave us our w-2's so if I file right away I should have enough of a refund to cover it.
