According to Barbara Walters that would be a big mistake. Twenty years ago, Barbara was going to buy an apartment, in the same building that Jackie Onassis lived in, for about $250,000. NYC was in a slump, kind of like our market now.Ā  She asked her then boyfriend Alan Greenspan what he thought. He told her not to do it! It was a bad investment. She listened to him and of course you know the rest. The same unit is now worth over 30 million dollars.

This story just proves my theory; When single women decide to invest in real estate, every man they've ever know, comes out from nowhere and attempts to give them advice. Some of these guys may still be living in their mothers basement, but they know what's best. Well, if Alan Greenspan doesn't know what he's talking about, then who does. The time to buy, is when you find something you can love and afford! It may be a long time before you can find a better time to buy.

It seems a bit unfair to lump all men into the same category.  Race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, etc. are not defining characteristics and are not , in and of themselves, enough for one to judge or be judged.  Just my two cents, since I'm a man and would have my own two cents (right, wrong or otherwise).  :)

"This story just proves my theory; When single women decide to invest in real estate, every man they've ever know, crawls out from under a rock and attempts to give them advice. These guys may still be living in their mothers basement, but they know what's best. "

Wow! someone has men issues. I hope you work this out.

Jason and Josh: I don't think I have guy issues, in fact maybe I have girl issues. There are 3 points to this blog.

1. Even the most brilliant people can give you bad real estate advice.

2. In 20 years of working with single men and single women, I've never had a guy change his mind because of what his girlfriend, mom, sister or co-worker had to say about a property. That has not been the case with my single women clients. The classic story is where Dad comes in and takes over the offer writing process and the client ends ups loosing the deal. Another situation is where the 'nare do well' (that's old English for under employed) boyfriend talks his girlfriend (she's the one with the stable income and good credit)out of every property that comes up because it's not as chic as the place they are renting.

3. When purchasing a home, do your research, make sure it's with-in your reach financially and then listen to your gut instinct. You are the one who is going to be living in this place, not Alan Greenspan.

For all of the single women, who make their own decisions and the guys who don't rush in to give advice; Good for you...keep it up.

No, but I'll gladly give Alan some real estate advice!!

And some advice to you boys above me here... get over it! You missed her point completely!! She's just saying what we all know is true, men tend towards following their chivalrous instincts and try to protect us from making big, scary financial decisions all by our little 'ol selves. We see this happening to our female clients everyday (see #3), so we know what we're talking about - again!!

Smile boys!

hmmm first of all I didn't know Al & Barbara were once an item. I wonder why they didn't make it? haha Second, as a single woman, I do seek advice for buying a home. But mostly from my mom, not from my father. My mother has made much better financial decisions than my father and also she understands my needs. I frankly don't and wouldn't listen to my friends for financial advice, because those come and go and my investment will stay with me, whether they are good or bad. I do think that the blog can be seen as one sided toward either men or women. Overall, I think men do have tendencies to spend money without fear and women are more careful with big investment. Perhaps that's why men and women behave differently under others' influence.

Cheers,

Cindy

Great Blog... I WAS ALWAYS CONFUSED BY HIS LANGUAGE... Ignorance? I would say I had a feeling that he did not wanted to be upfront and honest.

Jennifer: Thanks for the back up. I thought that I wasn't the only one who has experienced this.

Terry: I think he's more of a Libertarian, than a died in the wool Republican. When asked to evaluate the different presidents he's worked under, he said that Clinton was by far the smartest and basically Bush II has bungled practically everything.

Beth: And as far as Republicans go, I have to admit that I have some Republican friends and they are actually clean, well dressed and articulate.(I'm just parroting what Biden said about Barrack Obama)

Cindy: Thanks for your observations. It sounds like your mom is smarter than Alan Greenspan.

Arina: Thanks for your feedback as well.

Yeah Susan I heard that.  But he's a registered republican.  Until he makes the formal party switch, he's a republican!  He didn't need to tell us Bush II has bungled everything, ummmmm its pretty apparent :-)

Terry: I don't think he's going to vote for Hilary or Obama anytime soon, but since I'm also a polictical junkie I'm probably going to by his book.

Awwwwwww Susan, he has enough money.  Why not buy something like "Bushworld, enter at your own risk" by Maureen Dowd, its a real eye opener!  I too am a political junkie.  Listening to Air America radio as I comment.

Terry: I've read that as well. She's one of my favorite writers. I do read stuff from the dark side though, just to keep up with everything. This is going to be a very interesting year.

Oh yeah, isn't it?  I'm anxious to see what kind of 9/11 happens to bring us back to "terror terror all the time"!  The sheeple are getting restless, time to bring them back in line!

First of all what beautiful babies you have. Now back to your post. I had no idea Barbara and Alan were ever connected. Will wonders ever cease? I can see why she pass on him.

Dionne: He ended up marrying Andrea Mitchell after a 14 year courtship. I bet that was exciting for her.
