Going Green with LowesI have been receiving Lowe's Creative Ideas magazine and the September/October issue had some good & easy suggestions for Going Green.

SAVE  - Choose energy star for light bulbs, kitchen appliances, ceiling fans and dehumidifiers.  This will help you the environment and according to them could help as much as 30% on your utility bills.

REUSE - Salvage items that are in good shape and maybe just need a face lift.  You could give them away or sell them in a yard sale.  We found a place in Magnolia where you can donate old appliances.

CONSERVE WATER - If we turn off the tap while brushing our teeth in the morning and at bedtime that can save up to 8 gallons of water A DAY.  I just thought that one was huge but it will take getting in to the habit of not letting the water run.
Promptly fix drips and leaks, a leaky toilet can waste as much as 100 gallons of water per day.  These are such easy things to do and look at how much water you can save.

CONSERVE ENERGY - Turn off lights as you leave a room; this is another one that requires becoming a habit.  I use to tell my children the light flips both ways.  Now that our daughter has her own apartment I noticed she NEVER leaves lights on now.  Funny how things change when she is paying for the electricity herself!

RENEW -  Look for items that are made from rapidly renewable or recycled materials.  Some examples give for this would be cork or bamboo floors as well as recycled carpet.

RECYCLE - I wish we had a better recycling program in our area.  When we lived in North Carolina they had a wonderful program.  There are a few things that can be recycled though such as aluminum cans and paper products.  Living out in the county we don't really have a city to recycle for us maybe we need to make our needs known to Precinct 4 on this.

COMPOST - Some kitchen scraps such as coffee grounds and apple cores can be made into compost.

CLEANING PRODUCTS - Look for naturally derived cleaning products or opt for the good old baking soda and vinegar.  I have actually been using organic cleaners for quite sometime especially when I am cleaning around the kitchen or the bathroom.

Marchel one they didn't hit but does wonders is...for those that use razors in the morning like I do....fill the bowl and turn off the water instead of leaving it run to rinse your razor.  It save more than brushing teeth!  Nice post....going green isn't all that hard and it can be done in stages.

Marchel - Lowes does provide some great tips.   It is amazing that in the last couple years going green has become very popular.

I'm going to have to look into the Lowe's magazine.  Is it available online?  I guess I could go to their website and check :)  I recycle everything...my husband thinks its not worth the time/effort but I figure every little bit helps.  LV has a thing with their trash pick up where they also pick up plastic, aluminum, glass, and paper.  The city provides us with separate containers for them and then we just put them out on trash day.  The amount of plastic (from drinking watering) and aluminum (soda cans) from us is unreal!

Missy, I use the Lowe's feature also and LOVE getting it myself.

Robert, we do need to do all we can to help our planet, don't we.

Marchel-This is a great service - every little bit helps.  My subdivision also recycles newspapers, plastic & glass.  Not aluminum yet, but maybe in the future.

Gary, I had not thought about that but you are right.  It is all about getting in the habit of turning that water off for me.

Jennifer, I liked these tips because it was things we could do now without having to spend a lot of green money going green,

Mary, you can sign up at https://www.lowesrealtorbenefits.com/ it is great to sign your buyers and sellers up. They send the magazine along with some discounts.

Candy, that is great! Is it your trash service that does it or is it just through your subdivision. When we lived in North Carolina the city has an incredible recycling program.  I was so impressed with it!!

Now Marchel, these tips can be packed up and given to our "new crib" tenants too!  All helpful.... tenants need to save money too.... but then, will they take the time for this?  Do you think your daughter will?  LOL

09/18/2007 10:31 PM by Rice Property Management & Realty, LLC

Diane, Thanks for stopping.  You are right this is also good information for tenants.

Our daughter is all about getting out of debt from the expensive crib in Manhattan so I know if it saves her money she will use the suggestions. I thought it was so FUNNY the first time she ran after me turning off the lights!

Some great tips here, but do be careful with the kitchen scrap composting if you live in a subdivision with a small yard. Raccoons, Possums and other crafty creatures may be attracted to the smell of your scraps. I had lots of Possums and late night adventures visiting my compost heap at night until I stopped putting the egg shells and banana peels out! My dogs would wake up and bark at the snooping intruders.

Shelle, that is too funny!  Thanks for sharing!  We use to have a lot of racoons visit at night until we got trash cans that snapped shut and now they have gone to easier prey I guess.  We tried keeping our bird food out on the patio for awhile until we found the container in the middle of the yard, they could not get it open so I guess they were just going to take it home with them.
