Everyone's Choices Cost Them Something

House KeysDid you know with home purchasing and even with life

Everyone's Choices Cost Them Something?

It's true, there are tradeoffs to what you pick. Buy one house and you are not buying another. You are living in THAT 5 mile radius with that school district saddled with that house payment for years to come. I tell people focus FIRST on location and then the house style and floorplan and neighborhood cause WHERE you live is going to stick with you awhile.

Also think of all the life choices with job, lifestyle, relationships, interests that we make.

They ALL have a cost in tradeoffs with where we put our time and our money and the resultant happiness or turmoil and grief we get as a consequence of our choices. Life is all about making choices, perhaps trying a shoe on to see if it fits well, making mistakes of course along the way, but hopefully if we are smart, LEARNING OUR LESSONS, growing and moving forward to continued better days.

Think of choices as a key ring with many colorful and different sized and shaped keys on it. Like the buying the house and walking through that front door, MANY doors present themselves to us in life to open or steer clear away from or maybe open and stand in the entryway for awhile before either backing away and saying NO this door is not for me or saying YES, this is the dream choice or dream house I have been looking for all along and boldly moving ahead.

Don't be afraid of making choices but do learn from those past choices that did not work out and what you learned, perhaps at a dear cost of your time, happiness, money, energy, or alternative choice you DIDN'T take, and don't go down THAT wrong path again. It takes courage to step through new doors, but it is what we are called to do in this life, hoping each day to get a little bit closer to 'getting it right.'

Hi Gary. I agree. It takes a lot to make a decision... but the higher the risk the higher reward.

There is a formal term for this in economics, "opportunity cost." Thanks for the post! --JM

many times buyers will choose price first...size is something that will adjust to other factors. Price Price Price right now.

Every alternative chosen forecloses some others.

Some others cause foreclosures.

Hi Gary, great way of putting it.  Being in this business we have a lot of experiences to offer to our clients.  Ultimately, it's the client's decision, but it feels great that we can help them see two sides to everything that will help them feel more confident in their choices.  Thanks!!

The consequences of some choices are not reasonably foreseeable. This does not stop them from happening. The only person accountable for the choices is the chooser.

Very good post, Gary. Have you ever dealt with the person who can't make a choice? Most frustrating. And, no I'm not referring to children.

Very good advice, Gary! Sometimes you choose one house over another, and later regret it. I have one buyer who has been searching & searching for the perfect home for her 3 children and her. She must have certain things, because the children insist. A teenager even vetoed the one choice she made, after an offer had been made and accepted! Yet this woman has teenagers and you have to think in a year or two, they'll be leaving home one by one. Do their MUST HAVES really matter that much, in the long run?

I would rather have buyers take their time when buying, rather than, rush into it and regret it later.

Couldn't help but think about Forrest Gump, "Life is like a box of chocolates.....".

Plenty of choices to be made over the course of a life time, and each one sends us down a path that may or may not be the right one.  Keeps things interesting!

Hi Gary...We live with our choices and sometimes our choices affect many others.  It is good to be wise when making them but not to be able to make them is a sad situation.  Better to make them and rectify them if they turn out to be wrong.  If they are right, be grateful.

Gary, helping the buyers figure out which area they want to live in is definitely the most important step in assuring future happiness with their next home.  Thanks Katherine, now I want chocolate! LOL

Hi Gary -- You are so right about location, as it speaks to the larger context that we fit into as a community.  All things being equal, I will choose a community as a higher priority over a given home that I may desire more but is in a location I desire less.  Well said.

Location is a biggie for all buyers and putting it down as #2 or #3 on their list when it comes to buying I personally think is a BIG mistake.
