I am a mother who is always warning my children (as most mothers do) about the dangers of things.  Don't get in the car with a stranger, don't help find a lost pet, don't take candy from strangers, and don't let someone in the house you don't know the list goes on and on!

Well, Sunday afternoon, my husband and I were sitting in the front room just talking away and someone knocks at the door.  I answer it and its a nicely groomed young man with a big personality.  He is a neighbor (not so sure now) and most of my neighbors have helped him with this contest.  He was selling magazine subscriptions, and looking forward to earning his trip to be a host on Sports Channel.  I'm telling you this kid was a great salesman.  I typically politely say, "No thank you" and that is the end of it.  But I took a look at his list of magazines, and wouldn't you know it, if there wasn't any I was interested in, they would be willing to send a subscription of my choice to a local hospital.  Who wouldn't want to help out those in the hospital?  Sucker signI guess at this point SUCKER was written all over my forehead.  He asked to come in to write down the information, of course, he seemed like a nice guy and my husband was home, what could he possibly do?

Well this young man with a big personality was just joking and talking up a storm.  Petting the cats, talking about how his parents say he should find out what people do for a living to become more rounded.  Well, I order a 2 year subscription to a magazine.

Shortly after he left my husband and my daughter, who was in the other room at the time, question markasked me what I was thinking?  Hello... you couldn't have stopped me before he left with my check?  Immediately I got a pit in my stomach.  I have taken the CPA (Citizens Police Academy) I know he should have had a permit a badge or something to show he is registered with the village of Carol Stream.  I walked outside with my husband to see where he was off to, thinking that now I should contact the police.  He was gone, disappeared into thin air.  I got in my car and drove up and down the street, he was still no where to be found.

Now all kinds of thoughts are going through my head, check washing, identity theft, stalking, scam.  OK maybe I am going overboard, but I believe I have been taken.  The amount of money wasn't much, but he sure was good at getting all kinds of information from us with his winning personality.

Today I looked over the receipt, the one I had to ask for otherwise I don't think I would have gotten one, and there is NO phone number!  On the back a disclaimer about cancellation within 3 business days.  I decided I would look up the website that was on the receipt with the BBB.  Wouldn't you know it, "Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record  with the Bureau due to unresolved complaints."

So now I go to the website to see what else I can find out.  There really isn't much information there either, however the guy that was at my house was pictured with many others.  All of these "sales people" couldn't have been more than 19 years old.  I'm now feeling bad for these kids, what have they gotten themselves into?  I find the contact us link and there is only a form to complete and they will get back to me via email within 24 hours.  I don't want to wait 24 hours.  I find a phone number on the BBB's site and call it.  Its a cell phone number, with a voice mail that has not been set up.  Now I know I should have said No thank you!  I fill out their form and tell them my frustrations with contacting them, and that I will be stopping payment on my check.

Stopping payment on a check $32.00

Lesson learned   PRICELESS!

Listen to what you tell your children, it is meant for the adults too.  There is a reason why we tell our children these things.  There is a sucker born everyday, and I guess Sunday was my day!

Have you done something and later you realize wasn't such a good idea?

I've heard that salespeople are the easiest folks to sell.  My wife keeps wanting to go to a free vacation...where they try to sell you a timeshare.  You know what I mean?  I keep telling her NO WAY.  I just know that I would find some way to rationalize spending money I don't need to spend.  She say, All you have to do is say "No."  Easier said than done.

Oh my gosh, I feel for you.  Thankfully as you mentioned it was only $32.  I suppose it could have been worse.  I almost got scammed through the internet.  Great Post! Be aware!

Tania... I think it could have been worse, but didn't want to find out how much worse.

Suzanne... Now I just have to remember to keep an eye out for the check or stop payment again in 6 months.  They only stop for that time frame I guess.... UGH!

Joey and Kim,

Timeshares work very well for some people.  I have one here in south Florida that I bought years before I decide to move here. If you don't want to vacation in the same place each year you can join what is called "Interval International" and depending on the company you purchase your timeshare with you can travel all over the world if the availability is there.

As for sales people, yes we are always suckers for the great deal.  There are some books written on the topic - check them out at one of the larger bookstores in your area.

As for Kim, this only reminds me of how careful we all need to be when allowing a stranger into our homes, no matter what the reason. I know that quite well from my real estate experiences.

Thank heavens no one was hurt!. Glad you cx the check.

Dale... Great information to know!  I will pick up some of those pens.  My kids have lost checks for school and I freak out everytime and have to pay another 32.00 to cancel those checks...

Karen... I have heard good things about time shares if you are in the market, but if you are not the sales pressure can be brutal.  If you just want the free vacation you will feel very pressured.  It also reminded me about the Realtors showing homes to people they do not know, or LO's that are "sales" people and not interested in the client!

Wow, that situation is very unfortunate.  This is the reason people become jaded within our society.  We trust and get burned, we believe and are often times disappointed.  You should not Jade yourself because you wanted to help someone out.

You have my respect for reaching out to help someone.

I had a similar experience, but it was in a grocery store parking lot.  The girl who was selling the magazines jsut walked right up to my car and knocked on the window as I was getting ready to leave and told me she was trying to win a college scholarship.  She seemed so sincere, so I caved in and bought one.  Immediately after I drove away, I was kicking myself.  Why would I buy from a stranger in a parking lot...?  At that point I assumed I had been scammed, and since I paid cash I chalked it up as a lesson learned.  But about 6 weeks later my first magazine arrived, and I never had any problems with the subscription.  I guess it wasn't a scam after all, but it sure fealt that way.  I don't know why the magazine sales companies use such pushy sales tactics... I guess it works.

I find myself to be trusting of people in general.  And have really, just been lucky to not have gotten suckered into some kind of scam at some point in time.  Sorry it happened, but hopefully, it's an inexpensive lesson.

We've all been there at one time or another.  I'm learning to question things that seem odd to me.  I actually don't care what the other person or people think, because you just don't know about people sometimes and it is always best to try to cover yourself as much as possible in any given situation.

btdt - in fact I signed up for a high school directory through a third party company - I'll probably get "something".  Will it be worth what I paid for it - probably NOT.   And it's not like I can afford it.

Oh my goodness Kim.  That is so scary!!  Scammers just get bolder and bolder.  Now they just walk right up to your house.  I can't believe that.  I am really glad you're husband was home.  I would much rather have a little money lost than to have something happen to you.

To add salt to the wound, I'm sure it will now cost you nearly $32 to place a stop order on the check and then, of course, there's the bank's disclaimer that, in exchange for your fee, there's never a guarantee that they will catch the check in time to stop it!  It's a fact that there ARE people who lie awake at night thinking of ways to scam others. It's just a fact. But, as someone very wise told me, while it's important to learn from your mistake so that you won't be taken again, it's not a character flaw of YOURS that caused this to happen. You will be rewarded for your attempt to try and do something good for someone else's benefit. Regards,

I hate to add more fuel to the fire sort to speak but I might suggest you escalate this past just putting a stop payment on the cheque.  Recently I have heard of similar type scams where the purpose was not to sell the wares but to get the cheque. (sorry the US spelling check)

Again I don't want to alarm you but someone now has your cheque including in most cases, name, address, and most importantly your bank name, address and your personal account number.

I might suggest to take this to the next level in protecting your identity against theft by closing your current account and opening up a new one.

You can never be too safe and consider this company which is already in the bad books with the BBB are not going to be pleased when they get your cheque returned Stop Payment.  It is not necessarily this company in particular you have to worry about but the shady characters they may sell your information to.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this may afford you the opportunity of protecting yourself against the bad guys just in case.

Sarah - UGH!  They didn't give me that disclaimer when I stopped payment!  Tell that wise person, I love it!

Dave - UGH!  I have thought about that, and I think possibly changing my account may be a good idea.  It is an account that money only goes right in and right out of, so there is not typically much in there to take but getting my personal info is what I don't want happening! Thanks for the reminder!

Tom - I don't think I should answer the door anymore either!

KIM:  We almost fell for the same thing.  It was 9/11, and it was a horrible day for me.  This young girl came to the door selling the subscriptions, and said that we could send one to the troops if we'd like.  Wanting to do what I could for the troops, particularly on 9/11, I decided that I would buy one of the less expensive magazines to send over.  The numbers listed on the laminated sheet were points, not money.  It turned out the cheapest subscription was $50!  We politely declined, and then my wife immediately went to the computer to look up the company and found exactly what you did.  By the way, the checks were to be made out to a company called A.C.E. Incorporated.  It said on the web that they use runaways and just drop them off in unfamiliar neighborhoods.  It's actually very sad.  Oh, and the magazines never actually get delivered.

Adam... That is terrible, especially on 9/11, but I think some people prey on tragedy!  This one was a point system too, and the cheapest was around the same price.  Nothing less than 2 years.

Gregory... Wish I could see some good in what their doing, but not seeing it!  Hard to trust those selling door to door!

Susie... My husband was talking to him too... I think the light bulb moment went off and then it was oh CRAP!

I've been in the same boat. I like to hear there spiel, but I have been a "SUCKER" for a fast talker. I like to play around with objections and see how they respond. But, I usually have cash on me and try to pay that way. If they don't want cash I don't usually buy. Good for you turning them in. Better luck next time.

Great Post! I've had people come to our door trying to sell us meat out of the back of their truck or magazine subscriptions. I point to the no soliciting sign and they don't like it, but I don't like getting taken even more!

Hmm...

In my college days, I was approached by people who belonged to those companies...Yeah, it's some sort of a contest. Man, those guys were really pushy. But they were no match for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Now they were pushy, pushy, pushy

When I let my magazine subscription expire with them, they went ballistic. Calling me non-stop...using every single emotion-tugging technique in the book to get me to order another magazine. It was insane...

Yeah....after that experience, I've never touched a magazine again. I have the sneaking suspicion MADD is still watching me. The second I touch one, my phone will ring... :-) (yeah, sarcasm)

KIM,

My friend, coworker and not so bright mother, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

If you remember our old office at 55 W. 22nd St, you should remeber that there was a company down there in the basement that sold perfume the same way..... Now would have bought something from the? I don't think so. I think we need to have a class at work on the subject... See you at the office!
