Winter is still going strong, but Spring (Training) is just around the corner.  Seattle Mariner pitchers and cathers arrive in Peoria, Arizona on February 13th, less than a month away.  Position players arrive on February 18th.

If you are interested in going to Peoria to see the Mariners and get away from winter, here is some info on Mariner spring training travel and spring training game schedule and tickets

Earlier today, the kids wanted to play some baseball so we went to the Parkdale Little League Field.  As you can see, it was not quite ready for baseball activity.  The recent rain has melted most of the snow but the fields need some serious drying and maintenance. So we played catch in the driveway and will have to wait for the fields to dry out.

Ah, yes. Spring training. Used to be a big deal in Tucson.

No more. All three of our teams were bribed with new luxury stadiums and all went to Phoenix. Now we have no teams and two sad empty ballparks.

I do start to get those winter blues waiting for baseball season to start. But, I'm still not sure what I'm going to do this spring with no Beaver's baseball in Portland anymore.

Hi Jon, County and municipal governments realized the economic benefits spring training brings to a community.  Once they did, they started competing with each other.  Overall, it is a zero sum game as there are only so many MLB teams.  It does cause some communities to lose thier teams.  We were in Phoenix several years ago and went to some Mariner spring training games.  It was the first year of their new facility in Peoria - prices have almost doubled for tickets since our last visit.  The Portland Beavers are going to be in Tucson at least for this year.  Portland could not figure out a way to keep them here as it would have meant building a new stadium.  Eventually, the Beavers are supposed to be moving to Escondido, just north of san diego.

Hey Tim,

The off season is becoming shorter - the World Series never went into Nov, now it can with the TV mandated 7 game schedule.  There is talk of adding some add'l wild card teams - can you say December World Series games?   Surely it could not happen - some of the Oct & Nov World Series games are already played in freezing conditions.

Hi Jim,
Spring training used to mean every team has a chance to win - not any more.  Hope you are not a Pirates fan.

Hello Todd,
I am going to miss taking the kids to the Beavers games too.  The Beavers kids club was a good deal.  Tucson this year for the Beavers, then ultimately Escondido, which makes lots of sense for the Padres to have the AAA team so close.  The Rockies have a similar situation with their AAA team in Colorado Springs.

My sister and her family are in Eugene so we'll catch a couple of rookie league games when we visit them. Not quite the same but will have to do.

I have been in a fantasy baseball league for several years - not the same as going to games but like the trash talking opportunities.

Maybe we should get an Active Rain fantasy baseball league going - interested?

Hi Joan,

The SuperBowl is the week before catchers and pitchers report - nice transition.  I have great memories of going to Coors Field for a Rockies game then heading for the Breckenridge Brewery on Blake to have an Avalanche while the traffic cleared out.

Does Coors Field still have the Sandlot Brewery on the stadium grounds?
