What can a $112,000,000 Lottery Winner can teach us?

Recently I heard this story from a friend and thought it was just amazing, so I did some research to verify it.  I found articles on Bloomberg, Huffington Post and CBS News to name a few, all verifying the story.

I want to share it with you because it has applications in multiple areas of life - both personal and professional.

It’s about a single women working in the family business that has a very giving heart - even as a child she was giving her allowance to UNICEF.  Apparently it was her Mother who taught her about giving and how important it is.

An unexpected tragedy happens in the family and her brother is killed in a car crash.  With the possibility of her 5 nieces and nephews going to foster homes, she steps up to the plate, gets custody and raises them herself, adamant that they will not be sent to separate homes!

Struggling to pay the bills would be an understatement.  But one day a figure, $112,000,000, came to her, out of the blue.  She wrote the number down and focused on it, visualizing it when she could; she even thought about it when she fell to sleep, imagining herself holding a lottery check for $112,000,000.

Then it happened.  On Mother’s Day in 2007, Cynthia Stafford won the California Mega Millions; the $2 ticket she bought was worth $112,000,000.  And all of a sudden there she was, holding that $112,000,000 lottery check like she had visualized all that time.

Cynthia split the winnings with her Father and Brother, donated considerable amounts to various charities, and now produces films.

So what could I learn from this?  A few things actually, and in no particular order: make my plan, and visualize it, daily.  Also, give, give, give.  Cynthia advises not waiting to give back to others, that there will be no ‘perfect time to give.’  And giving doesn’t have to be in the form of money; there are other ways to give.

I think she took her own advice, because, when is there a good time to adopt 5 children on a single income?

Hi Ellen and what a great story.  She gave from her heart without asking for anything in return and look how she was rewarded.  Give and visualize.  They go great together.

That's a wonderful story, the kind that's almost too good to be true, but I know it can happen.  A friend of mine won a $167 million lottery several years ago.  It does happen, and that's the dream that keeps people buying those tickets.  I am a great believer in visualization as a precursor to creation.  Now if only I could keep that in mind every day.

What a wonderful story it does pay to give rather than receive this story proves it. Thanks for sharing.

Ellen, what a wonderful story.  The best stories are the hardworking and giving individuals who are rewarded for living their life to the fullest and not expecting anything in return.  How amazing, thank you for sharing!  --Krystal

Geri:  amazing - I've never known anyone that's won the lottery - large or small.  I agree, visualization is a big factor.

Pat: Yes, giving is better than receiving; she 'gave' and then 'received.'

Krystal:  She was living her life to the fullest, giving, doing what she'd normally do, and, BAM - receive time!!!

Alexsandra:  That's a great way to summarize it - hard work and visualization - pays off!

It is better to give than receive.  It's nice to read about deserving people being rewarded rather than people using the system to their selfish benefit.

The various state laws allocate a certain fraction of lottery revenue to prizes. From the other fraction comes the operating expenses of the lottery and the money that goes to state budgets.  For the lottery in Oregon and the interstate lotteries of which Oregon is a part, the fraction of lottery revenue going to prizes, as a matter of law, is 50%.

If California is similar, then the fact that this woman won $112,000,000 means (after accounting for lesser secondary prizes) there were nearly 220,000,000 losing tickets.

Among the holders of those millions of tickets were many others to had similar dreams but who did not see those dreams fulfulled.

Every time a story like this is repeated, the lotteries receive free advertising...for their onerous tax on the dreams and ignorance of our people.

Faithful One

I believe it was her faith in believing she would someday win, her persistence and she set goals and had the gall to stick to that fate. It paid off big!!! I have believed for over 20 years that I will be blessed with a huge financial blessing. I still believe it.

Lottery winners will not teach us anything good. They only inspire blind hope for a win and many people will be ready to go bankrupt for the sake of a ghostly win.

Good afternoon everyone! You shouldn't say such things. I think lotto can be a pretty good way to try your luck. For example, I was able to win small prizes while playing lotto online. You can call check ngay to find out more about the best sites that conduct such lotteries and sweepstakes. You should be more trustful.
