The Marx Brothers were born in New York City during the late 1880's thru early 1900's.

The brothers finally began to gain popularity with their Broadway show performances after many years of struggling in New York City and traveling in Vaudeville. During this time in the early 1920's, The Marx Brtothers and family lived at this home located (just a few blocks from my office) at 87-48 134th Street in Richmond Hill Queens. The house now bears a plaque donated by the Native New Yorkers' Historical Association. This house is also featured during the Richmond Hill Walking Tour sponsored by the Richmond Hill Historical Society.

They were known for the following comic film classics:

  • Humor Risk (1926), never released; thought to be lost
  • The Cocoanuts (1929)
  • Animal Crackers (1930)
  • The House That Shadows Built (1931)
  • Monkey Business (1931)
  • Horse Feathers (1932)
  • Duck Soup (1933)
  • A Night at the Opera (1935)
  • A Day at the Races (1937)
  • Room Service (1938)
  • At the Circus (1939)
  • Go West (1940)
  • The Big Store (1941)
  • A Night in Casablanca (1946)
  • Love Happy (1949)
  • The Story of Mankind (1957)

There are quite a few other "stars" that have risen from Queens, N.Y. and more specifically from the Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, and Ozone Park areas.

I hope you've enjoyed this trip back in time and found it both interesting and educational.

Vincent, Very interesting, I didn't know that.  My cousins lived in Richmond Hill and I spent quite a bit of time there!  Thank for the info.

Carole- As a matter of fact I'll be posting at least three more blogs of people who's names you'll most likely recognize.

WoW, Vincent

You're sure amazing at writing  history articles (as well as real estate articles...it's just that I'm a history fiend and enjoy these blogs of yours so much).

Jo- I'm also a history buff and I'm glad I get a chance (after a busy and hard days work) to unwind and just type away. Some people sit in front of the TV, I like to read and write. Besides, you know what they say- "Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it". Thanks again Jo.

EVERYBODY lived in Queens at one time or another - even my mother lived there for a short time as a child - right around the time most of these films were being made!

Bill & Barbara- I think you may be right about that. I came across quite a few celebrities (of the present and past) that have lived in the area I service. Some of these homes are historical sites.

I appraised a home in Kew Gardens about 3 years ago that the Marx family lived in.  It was a great experience

Larry- I would to hear more about this incredible experience of yours (what did it appraise at???). Have you taken the guided tour from the Richmond Hill Historical Society yet?

11/09/2007 09:59 PM by Vincent Martinez (Prudential Network of Homes)

Hi Vincent----No --I haven't taken the tour, it sounds interesting.  I don't recall offhand exactly what the home appraised at.  I did save all the pictures from the home.  Inside the home was a historical book of queens, and it was opened to the page that displayed the home that i appraised.  I did not appraise this home as a landmark property, because it did not call for it ( i'm sure because it would have been harder for an underwriter to approve the loan of a historical home).  It was a cool experience.

Larry- I agree. The underwriter probably would have a difficult time. Too many factors to include. Thanks for stopping by again.
