When you know you have to come back

By

Sometimes being a photographer means after you see something you know you are going to have to come back and today was one of those times. I was showing a home on the eastside of Portland and when I looked out the window of my car I told myself that, “I need to come back here at night… this would be an awesome shot.”

A view of Portland at night

Well, I couldn’t wait too long and I came back tonight and got the shot. Mainly because I knew this dry weather wasn’t going to be around for long and I thought I better take the shot while I can or my next opportunity could be June. Then I also thought, boy, this would make a great picture for my blog. (OK, it may not have been in exactly that order.)

It's amazing what sort of thought process takes place as regards weather. I lived in Portland for two years and when it cleared up/dried out it was like a national holiday had been declared.

Probably why I moved back to Arizona when I did. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 80 degrees here. Oh well, what can we do but grin and bear it.

Todd, Great idea to go back and get a nice shot. Do you use a wide angle camera? Great shot.

Susan, just because they made me a judge of the "Addicted to Activerain" contest does not mean I'm an addict. (or does it?)

Awesome shot indeed... I can so relate to the "I gotta come back" scenario... I have a notebook in the car where I keep a list of those places!

Portland lends itself to nice photos.  It's a city that begs to be explored and photographed.  I need to get up there this summer and do just that.

Hey Todd,

Super shot - you were not kidding about it being June before the visibility improves enough.  Quite the wet weather cycle we have been in.  Did you use a tripod or just held your breath while shooting?

Mel, did use a tripod and it was a 5 second shutter. In your case you won't get to see unfrozen ground until March. (LOL)
