Who's Stealing My Open House Signs?

When my wife first got into the resale real estate market from new homes we saved up some money and came out with a bang. We spent lots of money on marketing and plastered her name and face on everything that was for sale. She also had a real good base of about 1,000 homeowners that she sold homes to when she was with the new home builder. The market was just warming up and about to be on fire.

BANG instant success. The timing was just right and I must use that word "TIMING" again because if we tried the same thing in this market the "TIMING" would be all wrong. Getting back to the stealing of the open house signs in the title. In the beginning there were some agents that were not very happy of our success and had no problem letting us know about it. When putting out open house signs we would keep coming up short after the open houses were done and we collected the signs.

Keep in mind we paid for the custom signs with the photos and our look and feel on them. They were not cheap.ghillie suite for real estate agent I still to this day do not know who stole and who is still stealing these open house signs. I have often thought about putting on some of my old fatigues from my military days and hiding in the bushes and waiting. I still think of pulling a Rambo on them and just standing there in a ghillie suit completely camouflaged and blending in ready to pounce. Like Rambo. I know childish, I should just grow up.

O.K. maybe I don't want to pull a Rambo on them I just want to catch them. Maybe if I had my video camera and filmed them in the act and put them on my BLOG titled "CAUGHT RED HANDED". That would be extremely satisfying. I don't even know if it's another real estate agent it could be kids playing around or a city worker, who knows. I just want to know that when I put my signs out that I get them back, that's all.

Anyone else out there have open house signs stolen? Did you ever catch them? Any suggestions?

I understand your pain.  I have a lake lot FSBO posted for sale on Lake Keowee, in SC.  Several realtors have listings adjacent to my property.  Someone is stealing my FSBO signs but not the realtor signs.   Who do you think might be taking my signs?  I will catch this real estate salesperson individual and file charges.  I thought these real estate salesman are supose to be ethical?

Good Luck with your problem

I always thought that it was the teens or tweens doing the evil to my open house signs.

Until one Sunday I saw a jogger stop and pick up my Open House sign and fling it into the bushes. I asked him why did you do that and he had a rant about all the ugly signs and how they got in his way when he was running.  I suggested that he just run around the signs and I fueled more of his rant. He also stated that he would make sure that he drove over my signs with his car. I told him that I would look forward to seeing his tire marks. He sorta laughed and ran on.  When I ordered my next set of Open House signs I had the printer print  tire marks on the signs and they read  "Don't run over anything getting to my Open House!"

Ramona,

I think that's great. I'm sure the tire marks got your signs noticed. Smart thinking!

Mike, first let me say Happy Birthday !!!!! Second you don't say if you have the generic open house signs or what I have done is customized the sign with my great face. LOL Also another commented on it, but here on Long Island as you know we have many incorporated villages that have restrictions and the police pick them up. It is a good thing I know all the cops. Well any way I hope all is well. Since your visit, I have a double deal first accepted and another in contract. Happy selling.

Joe,

Thanks Buddy. It's good to be connected with the locals. Great work on pulling those deals together.

How did Atlantic Steamer do in the events?

So many different scenarios but here we have the same issues. The city will take them if it is on "their" property or a homeowner or a bored kid. People just have no respect for others property.Once in a while if i'm out and i see a realtors sign on the ground i'll go and stand it back up. We have to remember to support each other.

Robert,

I think this is the market we're going into - Respect and Relationships. Good Comment!

I recently had two signs stolen.  I was also doing an open house and when it was over I went to collect my signs and they were gone.  I thought maybe the sign police took them thinking maybe I violated the county sign ordnance but they didn't have them.

Like you, I thought of hiding out in the bushes next time.

Mike, glad to say ATLANTIC STEAMER Fire Co #1 won the 5TH Battalion Tournament for the first time since 1987. How are the tranactions going in Cali? As I mentioned in my prior above comment, I have a double deal on Pearl St. and another deal in Hicksville. I will be listing a commercial piece on Pine Hollow Rd. in Oyster Bay next week. I have the two closings in July one of them the 2.1 Million deal I told you about.

Robert, I have to commend you on helping and not hurting your fellow Realtor competition. Especially in these tough times I am glad to see you are working with and not against. Best of luck to you.

Alright Steamers! We're doing great. Mastering the Short Sale. Joe you are doing great and have all of my referrals going to Long Island. You're at the top of the real estate field on Long Island and if anyone needs to buy or sell there they should without hesitation choose you.

Mike:

Local municipalities here in Northern Virginia have been fining the heck out of brokerages with directionals and open house signs left out in prohibited areas.  We are only allowed to have ones with our mugs on them, or at least our names.  That way, we know who gets the $150 fine.

Then again, if your local governments were taking them to fine you, they'd have already been in contact with you....unless they are waiting for you to call and find out if they are the ones that have taken them.

I hate to think this it the work of a jealous agent.

Me too Chris Ann. If it is it's a sad stain on the industry. Unfortunetally I have had other agents steal our marketing materials from businesses and in flyer boxes in front of our listings. It's not too hard to beleive stealing open house signs is a possiblity.

I am selling my home "by owner" and have had 4 out 4 "for sale" and "open house" signs stolen from where I place them on heavily travelled cross roads. I spoke with the local municipal government and they keep a record of removed signs and they did not take mine. I came to the conclusion that maybe a competetor real estate person does not like the fact that my house is listed by owner and they removed my signs. I don't want to falsely accuse anyone, but if this true, has anyone else caught a real estate person red-handed removing these signs? I will come up with a deterrant to use on the next signs that I put up!

What are the recourses when you catch the thief and they turn out to be a real estate agent?  I know I can take my evidence to the police and file a police report and proceed that way but I want to know what other options are available.  Namely Board of Realtors, etc.

Thanks.
