Many websites are now devoted to helping people who want to exchange homes, almost anywhere in the world. The idea is that if you want to go to France, and someone in France wants to go where you live, you connect on the web and trade houses. Sounds easy, and perhaps it is.New Zealand

I was born in New Zealand and am planning to go back there for a few weeks later this year. I  attempted to try to find someone to trade homes with. I paid for memberships to http://www.homeexchange.com/and www.homeforexchange.com, to the tune of about $90 for both for a year. I chose those particular websites because they both list a lot of homes in New Zealand. The memberships allow me to email the owners of homes that interest me, and also put my home on the websites so that others might see it and contact me if they want to come here. Being in Colorado, lots of people want to come here and ski in the winter, and as it is summer in New Zealand at that time, it works out well.

However, I am pretty specific about where I want to go, because I want to be near the town we lived in when I was a kid.  I see many listings where people are very flexible and are open to suggestions.  I had a number of inquiries, but had trouble matching up both the time frame and the area I needed.  Most people had kids and had to come here during school holidays.  I wanted to go before the busy season.

If you have a second home, then you may not necessarily need a simultaneous trade. It could be that you would vacation in France in May and the french family could use your second home in July. In my case, it would need to be at the same time, and it has the added advantage of giving me a housesitter and someone to feed my cats.  One potential trade sounded perfect, in the right area and right time frame, but her husband was allergic to cats.  We can't have allergic people in my house!  They would be miserable with my three cats.  Cat lovers only!  kitties

Of course, there are lots of questions, as you don't know who the people are that would be staying in your home. Many sites have people who have exchanged a number of times, and some have reviews of the people and their homes. When I go back to New Zealand I am going to make it a point to meet some of the Kiwis I have contacted who might possibly trade homes with me at a later date. If you have traded homes before, do me a favor and comment on this post and let us know how it went for you (please?)

I have never done a home trade but the idea is interesting when I read up on it a few years ago. My husband is a very private person so I don't think it would appeal to him having strangers staying in our home. I love your kitty photos!

Andrew, I don't watch many movies, so we will have to rely on someone else to tell us!

Ashley, I have had people ask if I would worry about someone staying in my house and doing damage, but when they know that you are staying in their house, I think it would be a little different.  When we go to New Zealand in November, we will have  house sitters for 3 weeks but they will have their own bedroom and bath, not ours...  we will have to clean out closets a bit though!

I think the movie was called "The Holiday" but could be wrong.  I enjoyed it though.  I'm going to look into "house swapping" a little more, sounds better than some of those iffy hotels that look great on the internet but horrible in person. Have a great day!

Joanne - we hear about that living in a resort destination ourselves. We've never traded however, we did let a family I trusted stay at our beach house one time for a week when we were out of town and it wasn't the best experience - let me just say I found a black snake in my bathroom when I returned. (long story) - Good luck with this :-)

Joanne,
I didn't know you were born in New Zealand either!
I have a friend here in my area ( a fellow zoologist) who is from New Zealand.  She met her husband (also a zoologist) while she was studying penguins in the Antarctic and they ended up marrying and she settled here, in his home town.

The home switch is a great idea and I remember reading about something like this before. In Ontario, it would be perfect for people who own summer cottages.

Your cats are very beautiful !

Missy, the websites (and those are only two of them) are full of people wanting to swap homes.  Many are europeans, but you find a lot of americans there too.  Lots of people have done it multiple times.

Amy, you have found that too!  They can sound great online, but are terrible in person.  I have seen that with condos on www.vrbo.com  as well.

Cyndee, that is why I posted this in the vacation and resort groups.  They are popular places for home exchanges.  Your story sounds pretty awful!  You probably get some good ones and some bad ones, like anything else.

Jo, my family moved to the states when I was 12, and that was a looooong, loooong time ago!  I still have family there and we try to go back pretty frequently.    The penguins are in trouble because of global warming I hear.  PBS had a good show on them a couple of weeks ago.  It is really sad.

Joanne, How exciting. I don't know much about home-exchange, but have seen some movies about it. Let us know when you find someone.

Hi Mana, It probably won't be until next year or maybe the year after.  We just went ahead and rented a house for this trip.

Joanne, Sorry, I haven't tried it either but I think it's a wonderful idea.  I'm curious if a company screens the possible occupants or if you do?

Hi Stephen, the websites will give you a lot more information.

Carole, you do your own screening, but I think there are usually quite a few emails back and forth!

Joanne,

I have never heard of this idea before - might be a good option to avoid paying big rental fees on that next vacation.

Dena, I am actually not doing it this year, but hope to next year perhaps.

Rita, you also get a house sitter to boot!  Plants get watered and pets get fed.

Joanne,

Are you familiar with International Home Exchange Network?  Their number is 1-407-862-7211.  They're also on the Web.

If you go to Allen Hemphill's website (Allen is in Rancho Bernardo, California), he has written a great online article about home exchanging joys and pitfalls.

Thanks Eric!  Good information.  I will go and check it out.  I think I have seen the home exchange network.  I just selected ones that had a lot of homes in New Zealand.  I know there are many websites out there and it is a very popular way to travel these days.

OK. So it's not New Zealand, and you'd be stuck with a couple of dogs, but I'd be HAPPY to trade houses with you for a New York vacation- a Colorado visit sounds like a great plan! :)

Thesa, it is a lot cheaper than RCI!

Susie, There are lots of websites to check out.  Some specialize in certain locations and others are pretty general.

Laurie, you would have to feed cats!  I bet you ski too, as you spent so many years here.

Hi Chris, lots of Texans love Colorado, but I don't know if it goes the other way or not....it is a bit hot for most of us!

I have not tried home exchange but definitely want to.  Right now we have pets and I'm just plain not comfortable having someone I do not know that I have to reply upon to take care of my pets.  I'd rather pay a house sitter and stay at resort at my destination :D

Christina,  it is tough to work around pets, for sure.  I am lucky having my daughter nearby so that she can be handy if need be.  We plan on not replacing pets as we lose them, so it will be easier still as we have fewer!

Vacation home exchange is becoming more popular in Florida, mostly because of the Canadians.  Great blog!

Robert, we are just beginning to see it here, but it would be great in an area of vacation homes.  Thanks for your visit!
