I have become a "bird lady". I've always loved watching them, but my new house is real close to the Tualatin River so I get to see lots of fun birds and wildlife in my yard. I love watching the hawks soar overhead and when I had a disfunctional pond (that I had to get rid of as was basically standing algae water in the summer) I had a pair of malliard ducks that used to come and hang out for the day. I miss my ducks. I even have squirrels coming up to my windows and peaking in.

Now I have lots of Jays..Stellars' Jays and Scrub Jays which I have read are extremely smart birds.

It never fails that as soon as we get a good break in the rain, I first hear..then see one of these Jays sitting on my deck railing squawking. Of course I hear "bird lady, where are our peanuts?".

As soon as I go out on my deck and put these whole peanuts out on a table, they start coming. Call me crazy, but I love watching these guys come up, grab a nut and then soar away. It relaxes me.

The Stellar's Jay kinda reminds me of those "bad boys" in high school..ya know, the leather jacket, motorcycle, with that black crest and deep blue coloring. I took a quick video of them as they come. Yep, I know, I must have had some extra coffee that day..will be getting a little tripod.

Cindy--I remember seeing Stellar Jays in CA while camping many years ago.  They are bigger than the Blue Jays we have in the east. Thanks for the video.

Hi Mary, thanks for checking it out. They are pretty big and smart. I wish I could tell them apart to see if it's the same one that lands on the rail asking for nuts.

Cindy, Stellar's Jays (also spelled Steller's) are very pretty birds and the one difference they have with Blue Jays is the top notch on their heads.  We have them here in my backyard in Wilsonville sometimes, mostly though we have a pair of Jays that are here all of the time.  Beautiful birds. They are very territorial. We also have lots of chickadees, nuthatches and birds I don't know the names of.  You are fortunate to live near the river and see all of these wonderful birds.  Thanks for posting the photos.

Hi Mary, Welcome to ActiveRain! I haven't noticed any couples, just lots of Jays that show up when I put the peanuts out. My husband bought me several bird books for Christmas so I can finally know what birds are which. I still am learning!
