All my artwork is family photos. What do I do now?

Recently I did a post about why family photos are a no no when selling.

Now that you know why these treasured pieces should be removed, let's talk about how to handle the situation.

So often my clients have family pictures all over their homes. They are hanging on walls or sitting on tables and shelving units.

Sometimes they are the only 'art' work in the home.

My clients do not know where to start.

Photos sitting on tables and shelves are easy. You merely pre-pack them to take to your new home. If it is a very special photo you can't do without, place it in a drawer when you leave for the day or for a viewing. When you come home you can bring it out again to enjoy.

Photos hanging on walls pose more of a problem. Here are some solutions:

  1. If the photo is on a stairway or up in a narrow hallway, just take it down and repair the wall. You probably don't need anything there. The frames are probably making the area feel even smaller.
  2. You can replace the family photo with another photo. Choose one of architecture or scenery from your vacations.
  3. Magazine photos can also be an easy solution.
  4. Try coloured art papers or wrapping papers that add colour and texture.
  5. Why not put that left over wallpaper to use as substitute for the photo.
  6. If you have the budget, go out and finally make a choice about art work. There are many levels of art, just pick something you like. Find a piece that has your accent colours.
  7. If your budget is very small, you can find pieces even at the dollar stores. Make a grouping of these smaller pieces.
  8. No budget at all? Borrow from relatives and friends. It may not be something you would live with but it will do the job while you are on the market.
  9. Rent art work from your Stager. This can be a very economical way to fill those gaps.

Art work does give a certain polish to a home.

Family photos are a distraction for the buyer.

There is a solution so go for it ;).

Very good solutions, Janice!  Photos can be quite distracting whereas "art" blends in with the decor.

Great solutions for this problem.  Also, remove your diplomas.  Do you really want buyers to be looking at where you went to school, what you do for a living and just know too much about your family.

Thanks Sharon!

That's right Gail. I often wonder why people want the public to see their family. I find policemen are the most sensitive to this issue when they sell.

Great post, Janice. Love #9. Couple days ago I bought two nice art pieces for just $10 each originally priced $150ea. I will be renting them out for only a $1ea instead of $15ea. The rest of my art pieces are $4-$7ea rental fee.

Good ideas. I have walked into homes where the walls are covered from one end to the other with family photos.

You have to love those deals Anna! We are a reasonable source for art work.

Me too Jeff. It so distracting for the buyer. Does the seller want their home remembered for the photos or the features? The answer, FEATURES, that's what the buyer is paying for isn't it!

This is great!  I never really thought about a stairwell feeling larger/more open with no art.  It makes perfect sense.  Thanks for this list.  The wallpaper could be a great way to add those "pops" of color without over doing it.

leIt's surprising what left over wallpaper in a matted frame can do for the area.

Brian, I find sellers don't want to invest in the home they are leaving so my solutions have to be cost effective. of course, art work goes with you when you move but sellers worry it won't work in their next house.

Glad to be of help Malcolm ;).

Clients can also take their digital cameras and go outside and shoot pictures of flowers, trees, foliage (I'm in Hawaii so everything is in bloom).  Also, snow and ice on branches can be beautiful.  Or go into the big city and shoot architecture or even architectural elements on one's own home.  Do a series in black and white.  So many options, and you've already listed so many great ones.

That's right Sharon, no excuse ;).

Janet, a black and white series is an easy do. You can do it with your digital camera and your own printer.
