Portsmouth New Hampshire Historic Homes and Condos

Here in Portsmouth New Hampshire, we have many fabulous old, as in really OLD, historic homes and buildings that are just full of history.  Many of the historic antique homes are still being lived in.  They've been restored over time and are just exquisite homes.  Some of these homes in Portsmouth date back as far as the 1600's.

Old House              Old House 2             Old House 3

We are also fortunate to have some beautiful old schools scattered around town as well as all these gorgeous Portsmouth NH historic homes.  Some of the older ones sat empty and unused for many years, beautiful inside and out, testaments to generations of students a century and a half ago and more.  Gorgeous brick buildings, huge windows, gorgeous woodwork throughout..........sometimes when you go through the doors, you can almost picture the kids of many old Portsmouth families running through the door and out into the yard.........

Several of these beauties have been given new life in the form of gorgeous condos.

Several years ago the old community elementary schools were closed and replaced with the large consolidated schools.  Instead of letting these schools decay and fall apart I have thought that they would make great places for a family that has many foster children.  There is the kitchens with all that space, the classrooms could be bedrooms and so forth and then there is the gym.

I love the idea of re purposing old buildings. Saving not only our history but the planet. Why take down old buildings and fill land fills when a little imagination will work!

My forte in real estate because of my architectural background is Historic Architecture - you did a fabulous job capturing not only in photograph but also in words what these buildings are about.  Nothing like real CHANGE OF USE to accomodate modern living.  Great post Ann.

Great pictures and descriptions.  Most of our "old" schools are rural 2 or 3 room places. One has been turned into a township hall/firebarn and the rest are now private homes.  The old high school (built around 1920) was torn down to put up high rise.  What a shame. Glad to Portsmouth is saving these old buildings.

Just to clarify, old around here is 1870 to 1900.  Wasn't much here before then.

I love going to historic areas and checking out the old buildings.  There is just something about stepping into one that makes me appreciate it so much more than our current structures.

I have seen a couple shows where someone took an old building or structure and converted it to be their home.  Similar to what you are describing.  It is very interesting to see the history continue on to create a new story.

Gorgeous I always wondered about schools.  My old elementary is an office building.  Condos in old schools could be great...I had an 1850 house listed earlier this year..(it is on the market still...second agent who had it listed as built in 1950 for the longest time) 1850 that is old for Worthington...a New England village in Ohio. Actually there are some older houses. Older houses in Columbus.

1600's wow!!!

Great post and photos, Ann.

There's a wonderful B&B that we stayed in recently in Park City, Utah that is a converted schoolhouse. It was wonderful.

It's also interesting to see churches that have been renovated into residences.
