moneyWhile your odds of winning the lottery may be poor, there may still be Free Money out there with your name on it; and our mobile society increases the odds that somewhere, sometime you failed to receive money that was due.  According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, NAUPA, a non-profit organization with members representing all states plus the District of Columbia, more than 32 billion dollars in unclaimed money is out there waiting for its rightful owners.

Examples of missing money are insurance policy benefits, refunds of mortgage insurance premiums, tax refunds, corporate dividends or stocks, and others.  And the good news is; you don’t have to pay anyone to find it for you.  As a matter of fact, if you are contacted by an organization offering to help you recover some missing money for a “small” fee, the odds are pretty good that you have money out there just waiting to be claimed.  In general, you can avoid those offering help and their fees if you have access to a computer and a little time.

I have actually been contacted by someone like that, and never heard back after I did what he asked.

Jay - When they contact it's usually because they've already found or think they've found money for you.  You should follow up with the sites linked on the website.  Good luck; and remember I only charge a 10% finders fee : )

You never know if it's a scam or not.  I would probably ignore them unless they knocked on my door with the money.

Pat - That's why you should conduct your own search. It's easy and could be rewarding.

Hi John,

Scott has a cousin who loves tracing the family tree.  In her research of public records, she found money that was Scott's from a checking account when he was a teenager and let us know about it.  It was fairly easy to verify and we ended up getting a check from the state of NJ for $263.  Absolutely worth the 15 minutes it took to fill out their claim forms.

It never hurts to check the state comptroller's site.  I found $300 from a long ago utility deposit I'd forgotten about.

Lisa - I've known others who have "found" money like that--sometimes hundreds or even thousands of dollars.  It's worth the effort.

Tricia - Great! Free money is always nice.

John.. there are so many scams that I get e-mails from, about missing money. But you are correct in saying that one would not know unless you do the research... good info here.

John,

Some of the basic information can be found quite easily. But, you are right, it's legit and not a scam.

Jeff - And you don't need help to do it.

Brian - And a few minutes of your time just might pay off.
