Super Homestead
There will be much debate on the Super Homestead coming to the voters January 29. There will be pros and cons on this subject. Certain groups will have lobbyists telling you about all the service cuts, when in reality government spending has almost doubled, with a total of 99% in increases over the last seven years.
I remember services being more than adequate 7 years ago. The frivolous spending will be where the cuts will begin. Projects like the additional libraries that no one uses anymore due to the ease of the internet and the multi million dollar convention Center that has very few functions will be where much of the cuts will come from.
Opponents to this also try to scare people by telling homeowners they will lose their 3% cap and based on increases in home valuation the last 5 years how much taxes will increase without the cap. First off, the days of double digit percentage increases on homes is over and was relatively short lived and additionally Governor Crist has put in place a legislative annual cap on spending for government.
This tax cut is needed more than most people even realize. Real estate fuels the economy in more ways than people know. The thousand of jobs associated with this industry is incredible. The trickle down affect from the builders down to the people that are carpet installers and all those in between is huge as the spending power of everyone is impacted. These factors have put a severe strain on our economy.
The proposed Super Homestead will allow people to move up for those that need bigger homes and downsize for seniors and other people that need to do such. Right now their hands are tied because under the current system taxes increase so much upon moving from a homesteaded property to a different property, it is much less expensive to stay where you are. Even downsizing can cost more based on the valuation of a new property when you are moving from a homesteaded property.
Vote for the Super homestead in January, it is not a cure all but is certainly a step in the right direction.
