How the Music is Made

I can recall easily times that I was disappointed when I went to listen to what I thought would be a great band.  One time I heard about  jazz bassist that was going to play with a trio that included my favorite drummer in the area, and one of the best jazz guitarists in town.  Obviously, to be playing with these guys, this cat had to be great!  To top it all off, the areas most renowned poet (Miller Williams, Clintons last inaugural poet) was going to be there to read in between songs.  What a treat!

The drums started with a swinging cymbal and soft tattats on the snare, and in came the lead guitar and bass.  The lead guitar was perfect...the bass was not.  As they played through the first two or three songs the bass was sliding up and down the neck like a trombone trying to find the right note.  Then I finally realized it.  This guy was drunk!

How can he expect to be his best when he's not physically and mentally prepared?

Our business is the same way.

We have to know the notes, but that's not enough.  Knowledge has to be the featured instrument, but without the rhythm of good timing, the smooth tone of empathy and understanding, and the underlying bass of a strong team to see a deal through we will look like a bunch of drunk frat boys at a karaoke bar. (Thus the picture underneath).

Are you a drunk karaoke dork, or a trained professional?

As the night went on, the bass player sobered up and played an amazing finale.  It's a shame that the whole concert wasn't as strong.
