It is Always Important to Have A Backup Plan – even at Starbucks.

Starbucks in Canton MA seems to have a seating problem.Today is the second time that I have run into problems in Starbucks in Canton MA.

Now, let me start off by saying that I love Starbucks.

Working out of a home office, I like to go there occasionally to have other people around.I also like coffeeto meet clients at Starbucks as it is a neutral location for both of us.Today, I went there because I had my monthly cleaning crew in my house and I wanted to get out of their way.I had a home inspection to attend a little later on so I wanted to go somewhere where I could get a little work done before the inspection. So, I headed off to my favorite Starbucks right here in Canton MA.

When I drove in the parking lot I wondered if they were giving away free coffee or something!Maybe they were hiring and having a job fair? The parking lot was full! But I found a space and went in.No seats anywhere! And, there were others waiting for a seat. The place was hopping.

Discouraged, I left and headed to the McDonalds in the same shopping area.McDonalds also has free WiFi but it is not the same as being at Starbucks.First of all, the atmosphere is different.Secondly, I did not really want to eat anything there.Thirdly, I did not want to get anything to drink at McDonald’s either as I am not a coffee drinker.(I go to Starbucks for their Chai – Grande Non-Fat Chai Latte to be exact.)I feel guilty using the WiFi and not buying anything (must be the Catholic guilt kicking in).Not to worry, there seems to be an issue with the WiFi in McDonald’s!  Somehow, that made me feel less guilty for sitting there and not buying anything.I figured at least I had a place to sit & could use my phone for internet so I decided to stay and type up my blog post for the day.If nothing else, the situation had inspired something to blog about!

This is not the first time I have run into a seating problem in Starbucks.Yesterday I was in the area and was in there for my Chai fix and the place was once again packed.Apparently Wednesdays is “baby day” at Starbucks in Canton; a local group of new moms meets there every Wednesday with their babies.Who knew?Luckily, I was not planning on staying anyway and those babies were very cute to look at while I was waiting for my drink.I made a mental note not to plan to hang out there on Wednesday afternoons! One other time I was meeting a client at Starbucks and again, no seats, so we headed to Dunkin Donuts, which definitely does NOT have a Grande Non-Fat Chai Latte.

It is always important to have a backup plan – even when planning on hanging out at Starbucks!

LOL  and they say people are broke....when Starbucks is that full I see it as a sign that the economy is not as bad as the media says!  LOL   I agree...you have to have a back up plan!!!

Christine,

I am running into the same scenario lately.  A few weeks ago I was sitting in the Starbucks in Willow Glen and waited for a long time for a chair and ended up outside until my battery ran out.  Inside there was still no room, however, a guy used a table and three chairs for his stuff.  I politely removed a bag grabbed a chair plugged in my laptop and placed my computer on my lap.  He wanted to make room at his table but I didn't want to inconvenience him.

That was my plan B.

Deborah....I was thinking the same thing!  It wasn't just people sitting there using the WiFi & not buying anything either; they all had drinks & the line at the register was long too!  AND, later on, after my home inspection I stopped at Panera to pick up a sandwich, the line there was out the door too!!

Anja....A year or so ago they closed some of their stores; around here the two in the neighboring towns were closed.  I am wondering if that had something to do with it. I would have gone outside if it wasn't cold & snowy! LOL!

And, I just made an appointment to meet someone there next Friday!  I should know better but I plan to get there 1/2 hour early!

I can relate to you so well.  I'm in Starbucks all the time for same reason.  McD's is sometimes the back up, but I agree it's not nearly the same.
