Yesterday, I went to a nearby Barnes and Noble while my son was attending a freshman orientation and saw this pamphlet in the childrens' area. The store manager came by and told me alittle bit about the program. Next week, starting on Monday, January 24th and ending on Friday, January 29th, will be "No Name Calling Week", where over 5,300 educators across the country will help children become more aware of bullying.
The pamphlet lists various activities for children to participate in, such as:
1. Entering a "No Name-Calling Week" Creative Expression contest.
2. Hold a "No Name Calling Week" poster contest.
3. Spreading the word in your school morning announcements.
4. Developing a classroom anti-slur policy.
5. Writing an article for the school newspaper.
6. Creating a library display.
7. Discussing sportsmanship in physical education classes.
8. Watching the 27-minute video from the "No Name Calling Week" kit.
9. Taking a "Name Calling" survey in your school.
10. Wearing "No Name-Calling Week" stickers, buttons and T-shirts to show their support.
Where does Barnes and Noble tie in with all of this, you might ask? There's also a recommended reading list of children's books as well as teen books for children to understand situations where there might be bullying in their school.
For more information on this program, you can to their website at www.nonamecallingweek.org.
