Selling Your Home with a Home Office?
So many people are working from home now, it is almost a necessity to have a home office. But the problems with having a home office is that it is also a place to work. And with work, comes clutter and mess.
So what do you do if you want to sell your home? Make sure you stage it like any other room in the house. It should appear well-organized and and very neat and tidy. It should not look unattractive and messy by having cords hanging everywhere. Make sure they are out of sight.
Now is the time to do all the organizing you should have done. Use color coded files for storage and keep all the small accessories like paper clips and scissors, in the drawer. You want to look like you have a room the cries out "productivity".
Oh, that's so true. If it's all pretty and super organized then people can imagine themselves with their own perfect home office. After all, I think we all wish to have a neat, clean, efficient office space!
Debra, You are so correct, the office needs to scream PRODUCTIVITY, NOT SMALL AND CLUTTERED! I better go clean mine right now!!! lol
Good advice- I have seen so many home offices that are so cluttered and disorganized that your are scared to walk in and talk a look.
A beautifully designed home office goes a long way to help sell the home.
Great advice plus if you work from home and some of your files are confidential, you need to make sure these files are locked away safely. Your bank statements and bills should also be put away. A home office is a real plus in todays market.
Debra- the home office is one of the toughest areas to stage because of all of the computer cords and connections that go with having a home office. And because "work must go on" the seller is reluctant to make too many changes to the area. However, you're right... it needs to be as need and organized as any other area of the house.
Debra--your right, neat and tidy is a must. Just as Wanda said, though, while your selling sellers need to remember not to keep all the personal things so "handy." Not everyone walks around with an agent by their side, and anything typically accessible, i.e. bills, jewelry, medications, should be tucked away. That doesn't include the front of a drawer, that is still too easy. Sorry to say it's so, but it is a sign of the times we live in and we can only advise our sellers to error on the side of caution.
