Staging when done right highlights the HOUSE not the creative genious of the decorator who "staged" it. When a house looks "staged" the decorating becomes a distraction, and I believe the staging has failed.

The house that is clean, uncluttered, depersonalized, in good repair, painted in neutral colors and decorated ever so subtly - is successfully staged.  Just add the appropriate price tag (based on a reputable real estate agent's advice) and you have a house that's ready to sell. 

The house that the agent describes as "Easy to Show" - is successfully staged. The house where the buyer walks in and immediately says, "THIS IS THE ONE!" (when they can't even pinpoint exactly why) - is successfully staged.

The house that looks good and just feels right is the very definition of successful staging. Staging is NOT decorating it's quite the opposite. Staging a house to sell means UN-decorating it - taking the personal taste, style and persoanlity of the seller out of the house so that it will appeal to a broader audience.  

Staging doesn't mean stripping a house of the sellers personality and replacing it a decorator's.  The successfully staged home has mass appeal.
