Communication - what did you say??

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Gwynn Teal Carpenter-Broker: Home and Hearth Realty (Austin)

Just saw "The King's Speech" and it brought to mind the communication we do daily.  How do you communicate?

As Realtors we love to hear our own voices...but the information we need to hear should be coming from our clients.

Do you ask a question and then REALLY listen for the answer?  Or do you assume what is going to be said?  Did you hear all that your client wanted you to hear?

Communication is more than the sound of one's voice. Do you read body language?

•·         If you see your clients eyes roll back into their head, I think they have absorbed as much as they can for the day.

•·         Does your client become increasing quiet?  Maybe they are in need of food or drink - low blood sugar can cause one to be weak and unresponsive.

•·         After being positive, the client becomes more negative...maybe it's time to stop looking and re-focus their attention on the criteria THEY gave you (clients have as "selective of memory" as we agents at time).

So let's take the time to add BETTER communication with others to our 2011 bucket list!

Many agents don't have a clue how to communicate with their clients.  If you don't read their body language, you'll likely kill the reputation.

Such a good post, and a timely reminder for us all to take up "listening".

We agree Gwynn, it is really hard to listen when your mouth is open. It is even harder when your get louder to make your point (over them talking) or compete over who is right. Thank you for the kind reminder.

Great reminder Gwynn, I think we could all take a listening lesson.  I think when we take the time to listen to our clients and really hear what they say it makes them feel that it's all about them, which is how it should be.
