What happens to plagiarizers?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

I always wonder where they go. Do they start over like a Phoenix? Do they learn from their mistakes and rise again? Do they ever apologize or do they feel victimized, like somehow they were entitled to steal the information they so blatantly claimed as their own?

In some ways, I am sorry that their careers were dinged or damaged. Most likely it's due to stupidity but in some cases it's carelessness, maybe looking for a short cut, the easy way out. Still, it generally sums up to mean stupidity and falls into that category.

Every time I find that someone has copied and pasted my content into their blog or Web site, I feel for them. It hurts me to think that these people can't create anything original to write on their own or, worse, that nobody will find out that they are claiming somebody else's material as their own. How hard is it to put two fingers to a keyboard? Ask my husband. He's a journalist and he types with two fingers, always has.

I wrote to this agent who used to write for FOX News in Kansas City and asked him why he was stealing my material. He ignored my e-mails. At least when I asked a freelance writer for MSN why she did it, she had a handy excuse: "It was a draft and never meant to see the light of day." I don't know about you, but when I do research, I take notes, I don't copy and paste.

I agree with you Elizabeth .... but maybe you could look at it as "Being Honored" because what you wrote was obviously important enough that someone liked what you said ..... unfortunately they copied it w/o giving you credit.

Even worse, writing something no one wants to copy.

Elizabeth, I'm intrigued by the explanation from the agent who referred to the "draft".  Does plagerism only count as theft when one is caught??? Hmmmm...

Elizabeth, I'm naiive. How would one discover if they've been plagiarized? Google your own writing?

I think there may be a plagiarizing pergatory..who knows.  At least I hope there is.

I'm dumbfounded about the agent that gave you an excuse (draft).  No apology?  Nothing?  This kind of "lets do things the easy way" mentality is just plain wrong AND it's theft!

Hi, John, <<waving>>.

Sean, I wish it were an honor . . . Let me ask you this: If somebody broke into your house and carted away your TV, would you feel it was an honor that the robber recognized your TV could be traded for crack, that it had value?

Rob, See above.

Lola, A plagiarist is still a plagiarist whether or not the plagiarist actually sees the thief when they look in the mirror.

Andrew, You can Google your stuff but an easier way is to enter URLs into copyscape.com. Check it out.

Kris, A kid on myspace is one type of theft (the internet is free, man), and John Doe on a blog is another (you know, to them it's like finding a wad of cash lying in the street -- they know the wallet doesn't belong to them, but they don't care), but when journalists and reporters do it, it's like a double-edged sword and such a disgrace to an honorable profession.

Elizabeth, I can't get too excited about this. It used to be that manufacturers would patenttheir improvements. Now they just rush to market, make what they can before the knock-offs come out, and move on. I think writers have to do the same. Suck it up.

BTW I don't copy and paste. I write my material. But I don't check to see if somebody else is using it. I don't have time for that.

Elizabeth,

Happens all the time. I have found that nothing I create on the internet is sacred. If people steal content there is nothing you can do about it. I know everyone says that someone could get in trouble but up to now I have not seen it. Maybe there's a case somewhere 1 out of a billion that something was doen but I doubt it. Keep posting and writing - people will steal but you know it's yours. You just do what's right in your heart.

eye-opening blog Liz!  Thanks for the copyscape site!  I think it's great that you feel bad for these folks...  I'm sure most of us wouldn't be able to look beyond the anger and rage.  :)

Last year, I collected over $100,000 in damages from local competing agents who stole content from my web sites.  I don't "suck it up",  I suck it out of the content thieves.

Another one just went to my attorney last Friday.  Minimum damages will be $5,000.

Anytime I see a copied article, text or images on ActiveRain, I flag it.

This is serious business.  Stealing content from a web site or blog is illegal and violates the Code of Ethics.

Matt: Love your devil guy, but he's a bit too happy. You think?

Bill: I guess it's OK with you then if I steal your car. Better yet, why don't you just toss me the keys and save yourself the grief?  :) I do need to check for stolen material because I am paid to write it; and when it's ripped off, the New York Times will prosecute. They count on me to tell them when our copyright has been violated.

Mike: It's sad that it happens all the time, that people aren't better educated or that they feel it's OK to exhibit total disregard for the law and our Realtor Code of Ethics, not to mention their obvious lack of personal integrity.

Richard: That copyscape site is pretty cool; I agree. However, I find it doesn't do any good to get angry. When I look past that, what I see are very unhappy people who often believe they have no recourse and end up feeling shamed, if not remorseful, when confronted. So I do feel sorry for them.

Lenn: You go get 'em. I love your style. It is serious business. Maybe I should ask if I can hire you?

It is interesting how copyright law is in the public eye anymore. I read quite a few quilting and crafting and designing blogs, and this an issue in those arenas too.

People don't respect intellectual property rights.  This is how "free" music download websites wound up in Court.

Music is free.  Art is free.  The written word is free...yeah, right!  Theft will get you into trouble.

Eric: It does make me wonder. I don't understand the mentality. You know, I knew a woman in my early 20's who was a habitual liar. She made up stories so many times that she began to believe them. When a person would ask her what she did for a living, she'd tell them she was a stewardess (flight attendants, now) or that she wrote novels. I never understand why she was ashamed of being a legal assistant. When I asked her why she would lie about her life, she'd answer, "Because I can." And maybe that's why plagiarists plagiarize.
